Daily Kos: Lead Grows for Young Challenger in Alaska Legislative UpsetLast edited Mon Nov 19, 2012, 04:03 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
With today's absentee ballots counted, the young Democrat from Sitka, age 23, who cut his political teeth a few years back working for Howard Dean's campaign, is now up by 28 votes over established Republican incumbent and co-chair of Alaska Legislative House Finance Committee and aspiring Speaker of the House, Rep. Bill Thomas.
Yes this is a big deal in this newly created Southeast Alaska district that was actually gerry-mandered to the extent possible for the Republican incumbent's benefit. How did Jonathon do it in a district of multiple communities, most on islands separated by large bodies of water in Alaska's Inside Passage? And in a year when the Alaska legislature went from a 10-10 bi-partisan Senate to a 13-7, Republican dominated Senate? First of all, he has youth, brains (attended Yale), passion, vision, policy ideas, physical strength (mountain climber), talent (cellist) and most importantly strength of character. He's also a bit of a community organizer. Secondly, in a few short months since he announced his candidacy, he knocked on most doors in all the SE communities in his district, listened, and apparently made an excellent impression one person, one vote at a time. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/11/19/1163147/-AK-34-Lead-Grows-for-Young-Challenger-Jonathon-Kreiss-Tomkins-in-Major-Alaska-Legislative-Upset

5. This is actually a pretty wide spread for Alaska.
|
We've had elections won by coin toss before.
We are quite excited by Jonathan, though. In a very bad election year in Alaska, a victory against Bill Thomas would be something to celebrate. |

14. Oh, you know, old Don will die in office.
|
I am happy to see this new blood in the Alaska Democratic Party, though, even if it's just a state office. We have to figure out some way to turn the legislature back around in 2014. This year's election was pretty depressing, but hopefully, further litigation will overturn the gerrymandering.

7. They were tied this morning, but 60 absentee ballots needed to be counted.

Last edited Mon Nov 19, 2012, 06:31 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) It sounds like they ahve been counted and this might be the final number, except for a probable recount....

11. I simply cannot express how great this little story makes me feel.

When it seems like the younger generation is willing to let this country be taken while they sit glued to the sofa playing computer games you find someone like Jonathan. Mountain climber cellist who attended Yale and went island to island listening to people. I love it. |

16. JONATHAN WON!!
|
He beat the incumbent republican by 32 votes. Never let anyone tell you that your vote doesn't count.
My state senator, democrat Hollis French, won by 54 votes. |
