Already First In Line At Best Buy

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI Last year, she was second in line.

But not this year.

After not getting any of the bargains she hoped for last Black Friday, Ashley Wagner decided to get a head start on Black Friday 2012 and set up camp about 8:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, in front of the Best Buy store at 4460 Bay Road in Saginaw Township.

"Being first in line ensures me I will get what I want," said Wagner, who lives in Thomas Township.

Wagner isn't alone. Deal hunters are camping out in front of Best Buy stores in Fort Meyers, Fla., and Pittsburgh. In El Cajon, Calif., two women set up camp on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

With a generator, a can of Pringles and some Little Debbie snack cakes, Wagner said she's ready for the week ahead. On Thanksgiving Day, Wagner's mom will deliver a hot meal from the Turkey Roost restaurant in Kawkawlin.

27. It's just an admission that a full week of her time

is only worth the discount price on a TV or other elctronic tchotchke. It's an admission that she has no life, no job, no duties outside of being a place holder to get that stupid piece of consumer junk.

The rest of us have discovered places like Overstock that regularly beat Black Friday teaser prices.

36. She's there with the permission of the property owner

There is no law against making an ass of oneself and no law against camping on private property with the permission of the owner.

It's keeping her occupied and out of bar fights.

I say let her go for the glory she's seeking. My guess is that she doesn't have very much of that in the rest of her life.

Yeah, it's sad. Sad doesn't need to be illegal.

30. It doesn't have to be...If she had a good routine..

20 sit-ups, some crunches...break..
light breakfast..

push-ups and light cardio before lunch...low fat high carb. lunch--

jumping jacks and running in place in the afternoon...

Could be a real productive week?

9. I wonder as well sometimes. I mean, who camps out in a tent in front of a store for a "bargain" on

a TV or whatever? Is she using her vacation days so she can be the first one on line? And that diet she intends to maintain of Pringles and Little Debbie snack cakes..... I just feel sorry for her, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't care what others think, just so long she gets that flat screen.

3. I Dunno

She doesn't look like she could run all that fast. Being first in line just gives her a 3 foot head start, which might not be enough.

Hope she gets to the pile of $30 DVRs first.

10. Second in line gets nothing!

As seasoned black friday shoppers (talk about a sad group!) should know, Best Buy isn't a "unlock the doors and race to the deals" type operation. For hours before the doors open, Best Buy employees give coupons for the doorbuster items to the folk standing in line. So, say they have 20 units of a loss-leader laptop...they have 20 coupons that they offer starting at the front of the line...if 50% of the people want that item, then the first 40 in line are in luck.

12. How can you not get at least ONE thing you want when you're 2nd in line?

I've done Black Friday once in my 40 years - last year when we visited family in Kansas City (I've since moved there). Being complete newbs we got to Best Buy waaaaaay after everyone else had. I was assigned getting a particular type of television for one of my relatives (of course, they only had 8 of them so I didn't), but I got myself a good Garmin GPS which I've been using non-stop for a year now. Still, it took waaaaay too long, and I shant being that again.

13. She was second in line and didn't get what she wanted last year?

How can that be?

Before the internet age, I used to line up in the wee hours for concert tickets, but I don't know that I would ever "camp out" like this for any reason.

15. So how much money is she losing by standing in line all week?

Seems to me she is losing more money than she is saving by not working MTW.

Not to mention missing out on the Thanksgiving holiday. This is just stupid.

20. Reminds me of a Simpsons joke:

Homer: Woohoo!!! First in line and all I had to do was miss 8 days of work.

Man: With the money you had made working you could have bought tickets from a scalper.

Homer: Nuts to that.

16. If a homeless guy or migrant worker camped there, Best Buy would blow a gasket and

the police would show up immediately. Why is Best Buy allowed to encourage customers to camp there? Doesn't Best Buy then assume all the liability for those people? What if they were attacked, robbed, etc? What about the health implications from crowds of people camping in a parking lot? Do they have portable toilets? Fresh water? If someone got hypothermia, would Best Buy be liable? Does the local police department get compensated for having to have more officers stop by the store all hours of the night? Why are corporations allowed to endanger people?

PS, I'm glad I am not Ashley "Being first in line ensures me I will get what I want" Wagner with her seriously screwed up value system.

thanks to the local ad. Got me a brand new computer for $500. Watch it be cheaper on Friday... Ah, I don't care. At four years since I got my last one it was time to upgrade. Now to just transfer my files armed only with a 16 GB flash drive. Damn my PDF collection!

29. She gets her 15 minutes of fame and gets something to talk about.

Different people have different hobbies, I guess. My husband takes several vacation days a year to go scrounge around a flea market looking for old car parts. My only problem with this is that the stores require employees to cut their family gatherings short to open up early.
