OMG the Republicans have lost Cokie Roberts!
by xaxnar

When my clock radio went off at 6 AM this morning, I found myself listening to NPR Morning Edition as usual, when things got really interesting. They brought Cokie Roberts on to talk about Benghazi and what's happening with the 'investigations' in the Senate. Roberts is the prototypical DC beltway insider and can usually be counted on to spout Villager wisdom. (Cokies Law refers to her casual acceptance that really stupid talking points with no basis in fact have to be taken seriously because they're out there in the culture and getting talked about.)

So, imagine my shock when she came flat out (paraphrasing here) and said the whole controversy over blocking Susan Rice as nominee for Secretary of State over her testimony on Benghazi is really about Senators John McCain and Lindsay Graham trying to salvage national security - strong on defense as Republican strengths after an election in which they feel the party has gone over the edge on so many other issues.

She noted that this attempt to reclaim foreign policy for the Republicans as an issue is backfiring because of the rising strife in the middle east between Israel and the Palestinians; the President has to take a strong hand in support of Israel so (by implication) this is not a good time for Republicans to be nudging his elbow.

She and host Linda Wertheimer were also sharing evil glee over the fact that with 20 women now in the Senate (which they can't believe has happened), this attack on a woman and a minority woman at that is not going to go over well with them.

2. She's also aware of the fiscal "cliff" that's looming large

and that pissing off the Democrats, in particular, President Obama, can harm her benefactors and herself - corporations and rich people.

The president, although he said he wants to find a solution before January, knows damned well that if the Republicans keep obstructing him (or piss him off), he can retaliate by allowing all Bush tax cuts to expire and MIC budgets to shrink considerably. And she can't have that.

Remember . . . Republicans don't give a hoot about anything or anyone other than siphoning money to corporations and the MIC in whatever way possible. They've proven this is their only goal, and I don't believe, for a single second, corporate lackey Cokie Roberts, gives a crap about how many women are in Congress or how feeble and pathetic Senators Graham and McCain are portraying themselves to be.

3. Here's what all this Benghazi flap boils down to.

Republicans have to pick a fight with Democrats or the Teabaggers will pick a fight with them. It's GOP party politics. They'd rather fight the Democrats than the Teabaggers.

22. Yep its the GFSGCGB Strategy.

"GOP First Strike Go Crazy Go Big Strategy" which is used to reduce primary challengers. Nothing like a bunch of crazy to confuse the crazy.

4. Nice change from saying a visit to NY/NJ after Sandy was to "look Presidential"

That was a "yelling at my car radio" moment.

But I heard the same thing, and was stunned. Not used to this level of clarity about Republican motives from Cokie.

5. Which means that this is now the party line among the

"traditional" wing of the GOP. Cokie can always be counted on for that.

6. Tired of hearing about this over and over

For the last year and and half it's been Mitt this and Romney that from the beltway- blah blah blah.
And now for the last couple of months it's this Ben Ghazi fellow. Enough is Enough Republicans!

11. Oh, that's too bad

because you missed her comment that the Obama's should not go to "exotic" places like Hawaii for vacation (even though that's a home state of his), but instead go to a regular vacation spot like Myrtle Beach. It was a 'Classic Cokie'.

19. So The Answer To Going Over The Edge

Is to double down? Ask Romney how well that worked with his Jeep is moving all production to China false claim. Cokie Roberts kind of understands what is happening when she comes back with her "attack on a woman and a minority woman at that" but misses that this attack is warmed over Romney and that is what is not going over well with Americans. It is just more fingernails on a chalkboard -- something Romney perfected pretty darn well.
