2. Rockets to Tel Aviv and bombing Gaza

That's a great way for the Palestinians and Israeli's to get to like one another better. I am 50 years old. This conflict has been going on my whole life, no solutions, no incentives laid out for peace. These two groups are the most colossally stupid cast of characters these poor children have ever had to deal with. They would be better off getting 7 year olds from each side together. This is a complete outrage!!

98. You are absolutely correct.

At 59, I can't remember a time when either side of this ongoing shitfight weren't killing each other's children and pointing fingers at the "other."

We should pull ALL of our troops and "aid" to that region and be done with it. If they actually want peace, make them responsible for finding it.

100. I'd almost prefer the schoolyard "way" of settling this...

1. Have both sides meet on some empty stretch of desert, and leave the civilians out of it
2. Bring whatever military strength you thing appropriate, along with politicians from both sides
3. Duke it out, and winner takes all with no grudges from the loser...

77. Yes,

the fact that neither side has a political interest in protecting civilians means its the civilians fault! of course!
who said those killed agreed with the sentiments of those who brought the retaliation? because they live there? How dare them. You do realize, alot of the time atleast, that when rockets are fired from a civilian home its because.. dun dun dun... they forced the occupants to let them. its unfortunate youve taken such a hardline stance against innocent people in a conflict you clearly have little understanding of.

you should really change that nickname of yours on DU :p

blood is drenched on the hands of both political wings of this conflict pushing their own religious agenda,
how many people have the innocent Israelis and Palestinians caught in the middle killed?
two factions of religions fighting each other and killing their own people in the process.
no-one is a winner here, and the people being MURDERED for causes that mean little to them when they just want to survive day to day DEFINITELY arent.

Your analogy, such as it is, is formulated to mahe Palestinians look like unprovoked aggressors, when in fact they are responding to decades of intrusive expansion by a well-funded and well-supplied military power.

Israel, backed financially, militarily, and unquestioningly by the world's superpower, should act with greater restraint when responding to blind-fired attacks by obsolete weaponry. At he very least, Israel should try to resist the impulse to usurp and forcibly settle Gaza while killing Palestinian children.

To you truly believe that Palestinians have no legitimate grievance about how they've been treated? Seriously?

Lancet blasts Israeli 'atrocities' in Gaza

Israel is responsible for "large and indiscriminate human atrocities" in Gaza, and the world medical establishment is a silent accomplice in the bloodshed, The Lancet medical journal says.

In an editorial released ahead of publication next Saturday, the British health journal said Israel, by hitting civilians and wrecking medical infrastructure, had carried out attacks that were "unjustified and disproportional."

"We find it hard to believe that an otherwise internationally respected, democratic nation can sanction such large and indiscriminate human atrocities in a territory already under land and sea blockade," The Lancet said.

"The collective punishment of Gazans is placing horrific and immediate burdens of injury and trauma on innocent civilians. These actions contravene the fourth Geneva convention."

The editorial also blasted "national medical associations and professional bodies worldwide," accusing them of keeping silent as the destruction unfolded.

Remember the movie, "Escape from New York"? Let's say, you are forced to live in an area of approx. 60 square miles, and your people total 1.7 million, locked in Gaza.

Then, compared to the 67 people, including women and children, you had retaliated with rockets of your own, killing 3 people. Oh, and the Americans financed the rockets that killed your 67 people... fish in a rain barrel.

69. What is the point of drawing comparative death tolls?

In my view it is a situation that is not fair for those who have been starving in Gaza. I don't think the Israelis or Palestinian people want any killing. Then, too many here are unwilling to watch the reality. I find that interesting. I'm willing to look at something and call it wrong.

I wonder, why do we give Israel billions of dollars for this insanity? Why do we all seem to think there is a "two state solutions", as if it's an untouchable subject and apartheid only happened in South Africa.

Why are we giving Israel artillery and reporting from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem AND BBC international news is the only source for what's going on in the Palestinian state?

My opinion is a bit more complex than that...................

26. I think they should focus

on the policy aims of this latest Israeli action rather than the painful drama they use to bring about their aims. Trying to destroy US moves to resolve Mideast issues with the same scary ease that had conveniently tyrannical regimes crumbling around them, leaving hostile democracies giving birth around them. Trying to provoke an excuse to get at Iran and testing the regional alliances? Egypt is brokering that game rather than the enemies Israel really wants to destroy. And Hamas's motivations not to get similarly shoved aside?

Looks like a deliberate mess by all those who believe in the hard line on any side, never mind their own peoples. I think some are very afraid their own peoples want peace. That is why the real targets ARE innocent civilians. They are willing to convince both sides that both sides want genocide. Insane.

62. Rachel Corrie

http://www.texemarrs.com/072003/rachel_corrie.htm

Courageously, standing some fifty feet from the Israeli Army bulldozer as it slowly approached her Palestinian friend's modest home, Rachel used a bullhorn to plead with the Israeli bulldozer driver and his assistant, begging them not to commit this terrible crime. As she spoke, a young, male American associate stood just a few feet away from Rachel, his hands tightly clasped, praying to God and beseeching the Lord to intervene.

At first the bulldozer halted. The Israeli soldiers looked down from its cab directly into Rachel's eyes. Then, abruptly, the terrible vehicle was jammed into high gear; it lunged forward and headed straight toward her.

Rachel courageously held her ground and tried once again to plead with them. She obviously thought those Israeli soldiers would not deliberately and intentionally run her over.

After all, these were civilized people, the Jews, educated people who claimed a belief in a Holy God. Surely, the bulldozer would stop before its monstrous steel blade reached the spot where she stood. Rachel knew that the soldiers clearly saw her there, standing vulnerable and unprotected.

But the unthinkable occurred. The Israeli soldier driving the bulldozer, a stern and contemptuous smirk on his face, rammed the machine onward. He knocked Rachel down, ran the bulldozer entirely over her body and buried her with its tons of steel. After a few seconds, he put the machine in reverse without even bothering to lift the heavy blade, effectively running over her a second time.

63. Gilad Sharon is the voice of reason here:

With the elimination of a murderous terrorist and the destruction of Hamas’s long-range missile stockpile, the operation was off to an auspicious start, but what now? This must not be allowed to end as did Operation Cast Lead: We bomb them, they fire missiles at us, and then a cease-fire, followed by “showers” – namely sporadic missile fire and isolated incidents along the fence. Life under such a rain of death is no life at all, and we cannot allow ourselves to become resigned to it.

A strong opening isn’t enough, you also have to know how to finish – and finish decisively. If it isn’t clear whether the ball crossed the goal-line or not, the goal isn’t decisive. The ball needs to hit the net, visible to all. What does a decisive victory sound like? A Tarzan-like cry that lets the entire jungle know in no uncertain terms just who won, and just who was defeated.

To accomplish this, you need to achieve what the other side can’t bear, can’t live with, and our initial bombing campaign isn’t it.

THE DESIRE to prevent harm to innocent civilians in Gaza will ultimately lead to harming the truly innocent: the residents of southern Israel. The residents of Gaza are not innocent, they elected Hamas. The Gazans aren’t hostages; they chose this freely, and must live with the consequences.

The Gaza Strip functions as a state – it has a government and conducts foreign relations, there are schools, medical facilities, there are armed forces and all the other trappings of statehood. We have no territorial conflict with “Gaza State,” and it is not under Israeli siege – it shares a border with Egypt. Despite this, it fires on our citizens without restraint.

Why do our citizens have to live with rocket fire from Gaza while we fight with our hands tied? Why are the citizens of Gaza immune? If the Syrians were to open fire on our towns, would we not attack Damascus? If the Cubans were to fire at Miami, wouldn’t Havana suffer the consequences? That’s what’s called “deterrence” – if you shoot at me, I’ll shoot at you. There is no justification for the State of Gaza being able to shoot at our towns with impunity. We need to flatten entire neighborhoods in Gaza. Flatten all of Gaza. The Americans didn’t stop with Hiroshima – the Japanese weren’t surrendering fast enough, so they hit Nagasaki, too.

There should be no electricity in Gaza, no gasoline or moving vehicles, nothing. Then they’d really call for a ceasefire.

Were this to happen, the images from Gaza might be unpleasant – but victory would be swift, and the lives of our soldiers and civilians spared.

IF THE government isn’t prepared to go all the way on this, it will mean reoccupying the entire Gaza Strip. Not a few neighborhoods in the suburbs, as with Cast Lead, but the entire Strip, like in Defensive Shield, so that rockets can no longer be fired.

There is no middle path here – either the Gazans and their infrastructure are made to pay the price, or we reoccupy the entire Gaza Strip. Otherwise there will be no decisive victory. And we’re running out of time – we must achieve victory quickly. The Netanyahu government is on a short international leash. Soon the pressure will start – and a million civilians can’t live under fire for long. This needs to end quickly – with a bang, not a whimper.

Sounds to me like he's well on the way to proposing a Final Solution.

And started a war in Iraq....

"The residents of Gaza are not innocent, they elected Hamas."

So everyone here on DU, by his logic, is guilty because we live here, bush was elected (selected) and our taxes paid for the war.

"Everyone who worked in those buildings was guilty of supporting the US empire" or words to that effect. Every American is a target, regardless of age, income, background, politics...simply for being American.

Some like to believe they're better than terrorists by virtue of their "religion", "culture" and "civilization". T'aint true. We're all the same underneath if we choose to throw off our humanity.

that outside of starvation and disease, more people have died in the name of religion in the modern world than through any other means.

Feuding brothers go back to the Biblical Genesis...or tales, thereof...4,000 years ago. Abraham's genetic sons, the Messiah/or not, Gentiles and The Apocalypse.

I'm no theologian, but the Bible weaves a fascinating, deadly, story. Regardless, this doesn't end well.

All humans left on the globe are 144,000 converted Jews with Jesus in the flesh, as King of Jerusalem. The rest are in either Heaven or Hell. That's the short version, as I understand it.

Makes the religious fervor/insanity a bit more understandable in the here and now.
