The Rush Limbaugh advertiser backlash is knocking down the radio networks

The Rush Limbaugh advertiser backlash is knocking down the radio networks

The Cumulus and Dial Global radio networks have been adversely impacted by the advertiser boycott
The Rush Limbaugh Show is distributed to 600 radio stations via several radio industry networks. The show is syndicated by privately-held Premiere Networks, which contracts with Cumulus Media, Dial Gobal, and other networks to secure broad access in as many media markets as possible.

On Friday, November 16, Dial Global took a huge financial hit, resulting in the company voluntarily de-listing from NASDAQ. Dial Global's stock dropped by nearly 77 percent. The company identified three causes for its troubles, including "advertisers' response to controversial statements by a certain nationally syndicated talk radio personality in MARCH 2012."

Now, it is becoming apparent that Cumulus is also a troubled company. Dial Gobal appears to be on the ropes; Cumulus is, so far, failing to thrive. Both companies have publicly blamed Rush.

Either way America would be better off.

Rush doesn't own it.
In fact, any words or phrases used frequently by Limbaugh ought to be appropriated by non-Fox viewing Americans and used, correctly, often enough to lose the taint/stain left by Limbaugh's voice.

Rush is permitted to spew his bile free of charge on the public's airwaves. If we had a viable FCC, there is no way 91% of the people's airwaves would be occupied by extreme right-wing ideology. This is a monopoly of the airwaves, and, mirrors what one would see in a totalitarian society.

We're losing our 1090 AM in Seattle along with another progressive radio station in Oregon in January to sports, if you can believe that. Needless to say, I'm pretty upset. So hateful rhetoric designed to misinform and inflame the masses trumps facts and well thought out, reasoned dialogue. And yet this POS Rush not only continues to poison the airwaves with his lies, misogyny, xenophobia and racism, he and his ilk are given exclusive access to Armed Forces Radio. This is why I can't feel sorry for anyone who would willfully pay advertising fees to support this. F*ck them.

You don't enlist for wars based on lies and for the purpose of enriching military (unbid) contractors because you're the "brightest penny in the roll". Osama Bin Laden could have easily been gotten at Tora Bora with Special Forces, but no, corporate America needed a war.

of economic determinism may not hold. At the end of the 90s a station in Gainesville Fl area with a top listener rating (27 station market) was purchased by Clear Channel. Popular diverse format was junked in favor of RW stuff. Ratings dropped to near bottom and stayed there. Suited CC just fine. Other goals were being served.

Previously from the Democratic Underground

Rush Limbaugh – Fake Callers, Fake Audience

Last edited Thu Jul 12, 2012, 04:02 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
"Limbaugh obtained the largest audience during an era when audience count was made by manually filled out diaries, a practice which has been slowly phased out over the past few years, as detailed electronic tracking became available. Once the detailed tracking was available, Rush’s ratings dropped significantly, by over a third. With an estimated weekly audience of 15 million users now, that comes to an average of less than 3,000 listeners per station, not very good ratings at all. For comparison, left-wing giant Ed Schultz on Jones Radio Network sports an estimated 8,000 listeners per station. To get these numbers, we took the totals given from Talkers Magazine and cross-referenced with the number of stations that carry each show. Rush is carried on over 10x as many stations as Big Eddie. Even though Rush’s overall listenership is high, the number per station is low."

106. Well you know Portland needs more sports radio because of

all the pro football and baseball teams! (I don't listen to sports anyhoo, because there's way too much fascination with guys chasing balls for money. My golden retreiver would do it for free!) But I sure miss KPOJ, I could only faintly pick it out when on break while it was being talked over by dial neighbor 590 KUGN here in Eugene. You can only imagine how hard it is to listen to Sean Hannity blasting at you with the likes of Thom Hartman barely audible. I have wi-fi radio stations at work, but it's so frustrating to be in a "liberal" town and having 2 conservative BS stations and no progressive talk radio.
I'm surprised they waited til after the election to switch. I'll be surprised if there are any progressive stations left by 2016, unless the supposedly left wing media does something so support it. Or maybe some wealthy Hollywood entertainer could jump in and buy a network.

I listen to AM 1090 all the time in my car, especially Stephanie Miller and Thom Hartmann. I hadn't heard about the upcoming format switch. That is really disappointing. What do they expect when they bank on a bigot? Rush didn't turn into a misogynist overnight. He's been that way for decades. If those radio stations had refused to air his content from the beginning, they wouldn't be in the fix they're in now.

33. Yes, but none do it like him. Love him or hate him, he does have a certain

panache with what he does, which is why he is so popular, has lasted so long and is so dangerous. Others who have tried to be Rush have failed or only have had modest success. To give you an example on the left, there is Keith Olbermann. Since Keith went off the air, there have been many who have tried to fill his shoes and just can't do it. We do need to bring Keith back somewhere. He is the anti-Rush.

The rest of the crew are just as dangerous. Hannity, O'Really, Beck, Liddy, Medved, and 1000s of local wannabes would carry on just fine without Pig Boy. I'll have to take your word for it on his "panache". I have found through the years that lots of self-identifying Dems are quite taken with him. It has to eat at your insides though, to be addicted to someone you know to be a liar, hate monger, and traitor.

I worked in a resort once years ago, when he was on TV. Part of my job was often knocking on the doors of cabins and trailers to deliver stuff or collect rent or such things. I learned the hard way to never come aknocking when Rush was atalking. The whole resort would suddenly button down to watch him in that hour. I finally decided to watch him myself since I couldn't get any work done at that time. Frankly, I was in shock at the blatant racism, sexism and just mean-spiritedness this man spouted, yet he reminded me much of how Reagan could pull you into his mindset with the right words and intonation. I think the guy is a genius in that respect. Too bad he sold his soul to the dark side. Imagine the good he could do if he were ours.

The kind of admiration this political science major has for Goebbles, sick bastard but brilliant, utterly manipulative, cognizant of the state of the art, brilliant at spinning a new fact that 'lesser' minds find inconvenient into part of a web of lies with the speed and grace of Arthur Ashe returning a serve or Willie Mays making a catch and throw to home; evil but like watching Reagan at a press conference, unflappable.

There may be plenty of people just as vile, but Rush has spent years building up a following - a cult, even.

There are plenty of reasons for knocking him off the air even if it's mostly symbolic. Symbolic victories can be demoralizing for the target (right wingers) and energizing for our "side".

Clear Channel (CC from here on out) was once the holder of some 1200+ radio stations in the US. But bad times have befallen them and good old Bain Capital has come to their ?rescue? as it were.
So all this consolidation brought about by the 1996 telecommunications act may be all undone thanks in no small part to Rushbo. Fitting ain't it?

Even stations in liberal markets like Green960 in San Francisco were replaced with programming featuring Glenn Beck, and now KPOJ in Portland was replaced with Fox Sports Talk in a market with other sports talk stations and good ratings for progressive talk, and now Seattle's progressive radio is also threatened. Even when they have good ratings and ad revenue.

Clear Channel and CBS are replacing progressive talk with more sports talk and hateful right wing programming.

94. The Excuse Cumulus Is Looking For To Replace Rushbo With Hucklenutz...

Remember, rushbo works for Cumulus' main competitor...Bain/Cheap Channel/Premier. Earlier this year Cumulus and Dial Global began a show with Hucklenutz to compete with rushbo. Many of rushbo's most powerful stations are Cumulus stations...inherited from former owners Citadel and ABC...and Cumulus has been quietly planning to dump rushbo on these stations. Surely there'll be an uproar when the rotund sound of Oxycontin vanishes from WABC or WLS or WJR and citing poor revenues makes a convenient excuse.

99. There seems to be a lot of confusion between here, the Kos link and reality

First, the cast of characters.

Premiere Radio Networks is the company that distributes Fats Lowbrow, Glenn Beck and others. They're a subsidiary of Clear Channel Media.

Cumulus Networks is the former ABC network. They are owned by Cumulus Broadcasting, which also owns stations such as WABC and WLS, both of which air Limbaugh. They distribute Sean Hannity (in partnership with Premiere), as well as Mark Levin and, as of last month, Michael Savage.

Dial Global is probably the biggest of the radio networks. Over the past few years, they've been swallowing other syndicators such as Jones Radio, Westwood One, CBS Radio and others. They deal in music, talk and sports (like the NFL). Their talk radio division handles a lot of progressive talk, including Miller, Schultz, Press and Hartmann. They do not own any radio stations, so therefore have very little interaction with Limbaugh.

Then there's the little guys like TRN and Salem. Both are hardcore right-wingers.

The problem is that Limbaugh's assholery is reflecting badly on all political talk, both left and right. It's cutting deeply into everyone's pies.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again....we have to compete with rush and sean vannity and savage and beck and ingrahm..and the rest of these seditious animals if we EVER expect to see the color blue outside of the cities. The people live in a cave of fox-nonsense.

I've driven across the country numerous times in the past ten years...and once out of the cities...there is NO liberal or progressive voice. You can often get rush and sean and savage and the rest of the cult on as many as four or more stations from one location....
BUT NO PROGRESSIVE VOICES!! How can we ever expect to drag our country out of ignorance if this continues???

132. Yeah.

I moved to the country a few years back from northern liberal Ohio & noticed the same dumbing down. There's nothing of import in the press or on the radio

First is a national or state/regional press service that gives the liberal voice, along with local news to people can give up subscriptions to the right-wing rags, get their local news, some national prospective, and liberal op-ed pages. I'm not up to snuff on distribution networks, but this is needed. Probably a money issue at root. Sort of a 'free-press' idea.

Second is hit em where they are: farming news sources - field conditions, crop yields, stock prices, and ECONOMICS. Every region has a well-respected journalistic source that publishes this info along with other events. This would be the most influential place to find the thinkers.
They're also at mud-bogs, auctions, gun-shows, and church events.

We have to develop a feel for these crowd sources and how to get a well-meaning, clean-cut message out. Think family, environment, self-sustaining.

Third, and probably the easiest at this point - the 2-yr colleges and tech schools. There are no universities in the outback, but there ARE tech schools and 2-yr schools. Get the kids. They're young enough to listen and pay attention.

Whether these ideas can piggyback on some outreach we have going or something new needs to come about, I can't say.

I'm up to my eyeballs in activism right now or I'd dig in. Working on space-based weaponry on a global scale & can't get spread too thin. Rush is an ass.

131. They give away the programing...

The reason for Rush's big ratings is because they literally give away the programing block! Rural and small stations are given Rush for free as long as local add insertion is limited during his show. This works out great as theses stations get a big name show and have to hire less. Miller and Ed can't compete with free.
