51. Let's celebrate . It appears Obama and Reid at getting better

at GOP smack downs.. They have pandered to them too long. Dem's need grow a pair and fight back. This is a good start..
High priority in the Senate should be Reid's plans to make a filibuster be a real filibuster.
If those proposing a filibuster are not ready to filibuster with live talk, then there will be no filibuster.. More than fair minded, while preserving the concept of the filibuster.
It will allow filibusters , while disallowing 'filiblusters. '

6. *holds up hand in class* Question on procedure... Will McInsane be a ranking member in 2013?

How do you get these AWs off the important committees?

Are they purely on the basis of seniority?

Someone knows, bur not me.

BTW, good job, Harry!

17. No: he's not in the majority party

A ranking member is the second most senior member (after the chair) of the majority party in a committee.

* Sometimes the media uses the term also to refer to the most senior member of the minority party (who would become chair if that party takes control again).

37. I know he's not in the majority, but the seats on the committees must be assigned bipartisanly.

I think he's getting out of line and getting too much media attention. He's a ranking member as you say, not the committee chair. It seems like they'd be able to rein him in on these outrageous things. Appears this is more media driven than just procedure. I see where big mouth Rohrbacher got smacked down, but that was in media. He never should have gotten up and run his mouth. Not very statesman-like, but then there have been few of those kind of minds for a long time. Thanks for the reply.

38. Each party makes its own committee assignments

The majority party (now the Democrats) gets the chairmanship and more seats. We have no control over what the other party does with its assignments.

And seniority doesn't always play a role. But it is the usual method a party uses for assignments, unless they're punishing someone.

care about this issue in terms of national security, justice or any of that.

Just getting media attention amd energy diverted away from the things Obama and the Democrats must get done.

58. McCain is going to lose his committee seat in January...

"But in January, the Arizona senator will lose his top-ranking committee seat due to term limits. The only ranking Republican spot available to him next session will be on the Indian Affairs Committee.

Unless, that is, the Senate creates a brand-new select committee. On Wednesday, McCain, flanked by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), proposed just that: a select committee with extensive authority to investigate the Benghazi, Libya, attack and the U.S. government's response."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/16/john-mccain-benghazi-committee_n_2145457.html

It doesn't surprise me, sadly, that McCain would cravenly smear Ambassador Rice in order to try and retain his relevancy. It disgusts me but doesn't surprise me.

Thanks for that additional information. How very transparent that he wants to set up a new committee like Ken Starr to waste taxpayer money and undermine those are who working to change things for the better.

He just officially joined the scumbag brigade, IMO. Not that they care what anyone thinks. Most likely he'll do as his kindred do, grease his way into some private firm when he leaves the Senate to live high the rest of his miserable life. What a disgrace.

71. Or....Have you noticed some of these signs in his behavior!

Bipolar disorder is a complex genetic disorder. The mood swings associated with it alternate from major, or clinical, depression to mania or extreme elation. The mood swings can range from very mild to extreme, and they can happen gradually or suddenly within a time frame of minutes to hours. When mood swings happen frequently, the process is called rapid cycling.

Along with the dramatic mood swings, patients with bipolar disorder may have disturbances in thinking. They may also have distortions of perception and impairment in social functioning.

I think McCain lost it during and after the 2008 elections! I firmly believe he is not a Well man.

In 2007 He was 71years old....now 76. I am aware of all his outbursts . Including telling a member of congress to go F*** themselves. What 76 year old man,Senator, and ex Presidential candidate would act like this in front of reporters and audience!

This clearly shows an impairment in social functioning!

4. McCain vs. hecklers (2012): While stumping for Republican Senate candidate Jeff Flake in Arizona, McCain took on a group of hecklers in the crowd, calling them jerks and telling them to shut up. He also stuck his tongue out at them. "I'm getting too old to put up with jerks like you," he said.

Okay. I get the message. I voted so now my opinion no longer matters.

Time for me to fade away back under the bus to allow the Democratic bubble (yes, there is one here as well) of denial to re-form. Instead of advocating being Proactive in a changing world of public perception.

45. When I read the letter, I thought about what it meant for historical purposes.

It presents the majority leader's version of events now unfolding, in official form, for history. Which is important.

It's also good for morale of the party, to take a firm stand and put it in writing, rather than a 30 second soundbite on tv.

I also remembered, when reading the letter, that Clinton had said okay when asked if he would agree to a "special investigator" into the Lewinsky matter. The Democrats should never have agreed to that.

53. You and I are among the very few who have read this letter.

Last edited Sat Nov 17, 2012, 02:48 PM - Edit history (2)

There are a few more who will have heard of the letter, but, it's impact will be quite limited in the public sphere.

Which is where the republicans intend to take the Benghazi matter. They are trying to sway public opinion in their usual manner. What they say is rarely true. However, they feel (with some justification in practice) that if they say it loud enough and long enough it will "become true" to a large segment of the population. Large enough to damage the cause of the Democrats? Maybe.

The President himself said his greatest problem during his first administration was getting his message and initiatives out through the extensive obstructions posed by the largely right-wing owned and hostile media.

This letter from Senator Reid is more of what has already been shown to be ineffectual. What would I do? I'm not sure, but, I'm also not in Congress or in DC for that matter.

64. I'm not talking about NOW, or about the masses.

I'm talking about history. Those people who research for years and write historical books, such as the books on Lincoln, the Civil War, The War of 1812, etc. That's when letters by other politicians during an era are read, and they are read by academics and historians and authors.

That's what I meant. Reid has, for what it's worth, put in official writing his thoughts and position on these supposed investigations. A 30 second soundbite would likely never be viewed by historians, or used in any history or account of the Benghazi investigations. An official letter is one thing that would be gathered and read and used, if the author chose to.

18. I have one problem with the way this was written,

The letter was addressed to McCain, and should, therefore have only referred to him in the second person or by referencing news reports, etc. He refers to McCain's shenanigans by referring to him in the third person as if this was written primarily for other readers ... like the press. I know that it ccs other senators, but I am just concerned that the McCain will get his back up and rage at Reif=d for writing this for the press.

39. No, on the floor they speak of other sen. in the third person

because they are technically addressing the president of the senate. This was a personal letter to addressed to McCain. The first three paragraphs appropriately speak to the addressee " in response to your suggestion (para. 1)", "As you know, (para. 2)" , and "as you know (para 3)"

The switch, though not uniform throughout, comes in the next paragraph. That paragraph starts out "You already have the opportunity..." The second sentence , however, seems to be as an aside in Shakespeare: " For instance, on Wednesday, Senator McCain failed to..." . . .

that's it! He is being Shakespearian! that's the ticket!

I appeal to Brother Aristus: give us a line: a fare thee well for the groundlings.

75. In your first three examples of first person Reid is addressing McCain personally.

In the later paragraphs he is addressing McCain in McCain's capacity as a US senator and his duties thereof, therefore the formal language. In my opinion McCain is the ultimate surrogate of the Republican party. Next to last in his class, not too bright, and rich spoiled and obnoxious.

82. I respectfully disagree

or in the alternative that it is still incorrect. The letter was addressed to McCain. It was not given as a speech on the floor where it would have been delivered as if to the presiding officer. Even if it had been, it would have been proper to speak of the Senator from Arizona or such.

The fact that McCain is a stupid obnoxious twit does not make it ok

It started out addressing McCain in the 2nd person, then switched to the 3rd person, presumably to include the others named as receiving copies. Should be either/or, not both in the same letter.

48. He continues to make an ass of himself, reminiscent of 2008

It's so easy to push his buttons . . . I think he's toying with McRage in that letter

55. Fantastic letter. I wonder how far through the letter a staffer read aloud to McCain before

he smashed something.

59. Awesome letter and I love the ccs as well...

CC:

Senator Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader
Senator Lindsey Graham, Senate Armed Services Committee
Senator Kelly Ayotte, Senate Armed Services Committee

There would be more than just McCain exploding over this letter, the other craven creeps involved in this know this letter is directed to them as much as it is McCain.

81. Yep, it was a two-fer...

Pointing out that one of their own has completely disagreed with them while subtly reminding them of their hypocrisy because they did NOT have a problem when Condy actually lied, and lied multiple times, on the various shows, her lies as well as those of others causing the death of millions of Iraqis and thousands of American troops.

66. Yes, nothing say bitter old man and bitter old lady than McCain/Palin. Since the

president won back to back elections I have never seen such sour grapes. Now add Romney/Ryan to the list for the next 4 yrs. Crybabies unite.

68. McCain's still pissed off he and Bimbo lost in 2008. He was sure they bought this one. His father is

probably rolling in his grave over his son's multiple fuck-up's. He thought he gave him everything. Yeah. Everything but integrity.

Harry has this thing. I am increasingly seeing the reason why Harry is the Senate majority leader. He is the real deal.

Damn! Democrats have things in order.
