TASTYCAKES is way better than Hostess and TASTYCAKE IS UNION!

We need to make anti-union companies start paying a price. Twinkies, Hostess, etc need to become fatally damaged brands.

3. Tastycake is my hometown Philly-made brand

founded almost a century ago.

They were recently bought (I think by Krispy Kreme) and there are going to be attempts to take it national.

4. Flower foods.

The price of Tastykake stock collapsed in early 2011, falling from a closing price of $6.43 on January 4, closing at $4.05 the next day.

This decline, of about one-third the share price, was accompanied by a spike in trading (from about 5,000 shares on January 4, to almost 1,000,000 the next day).

This move came after a 7.4% drop in company sales during the preceding quarter of 2010. The next week, speculation in financial circles indicated Tastykake had failed to realize the projected savings of moving to the new factory.

On April 11, 2011, media reports indicated Tastykake's leadership agreed to sell the company to Flowers Foods, of Thomasville, Georgia, for $34 million in cash, or about $4 per share. (Tastykake stock closed at $1.61 per share at the end of the previous trading day.)

Looks like it already came under speculative attack & that's why they sold.

Stand by for the looting.

9. I see a Chocolate Junior...must buy...

For those not fortunate enough to have Tastykakes in their neck of the woods, that's a yummy buttery sponge cake with thick soft chocolate icing. Their best product IMHO.

21. Hello from Winthrop!

We've seen them in the walmart in 'Augusta and at the Hannaford here in Winthrop.

Krimpets and KandyKakes rule!

Now if only we could get Taylor Pork Roll up here, too!

PEACE!

28. oh man, are you kidding me?!?!

I went to Wallies World in Augusta my last 2 years of school. Never noticed them. KandyKakes?!?! Dam....I'm there!

My local Hannafords is too tiny to have much of anything. But if Hostess goes away, then that'll leave room for TastyKakes!

30. I've only seen them there in the last few weeks.

They're exactly what I need now that my wife and I have startd an eating plan designed to lose some weight.

BTW, where in Maine are you? We moved here 10+ years ago. For 2 years we were in Waterville, we moved to Augusta for 8 years and now that we've bought a house in Winthrop, we'll be staying here until the undertaker moves us out. We bought this house but our (now 12 year old) son will sell it.

PEACE!

32. I've been here 9+ years

I'm in Waldoboro, the red armpit of Lincoln County. Moved here from Mass in 03 when 1. W was gearing up for his IraqAttack, 2. it was clear jobs weren't coming back any time soon and 3. to escape Mittens on teevee. I figured it was time for the long range escape plan to kick in!

As soon as there is something resembling a housing recovery and I can sell this place, I have my eye on a cottage well to my north with 10 acres, a spring-fed stream and in a "transition county" if it's still available.

Few...just a few weeks. I feel better now. Maybe it'll turn up in my Hannafords when Hostess is gone...in the meantime I'll bet they have them at the big Hannafords across the street from my mechanic!

Yeah, and great. I just lost 4+" off my waist on my new healthy eating plan...

Namaste

5. Available on entire east coast now

Yes, Tastykake was bought by another company, but so far, it's been good for the brand.

Flower Foods first expanded Tastykake distribution through the SE, and have recently purchased LePage Bakery of Maine, and now have distribution through much of the NE.

I first enjoyed Tastykake when we would visit my wife's family in PA in the 1970s. They were briefly available a few years ago in the Portsmouth NH area, and I would pick some up whenever I visited my son at UNH. As far as I can tell, the new owners haven't messed with the recipes, and have respected the brand. It is among their most profitable products.

So I can go to the local Hannaford in Maine, and pick up Tastykakes. Unfortunately, not yet the whole line, but it's a start. They make far better baked goods than Hostess or Drakes. Not like a real bakery, but quite good for a packaged product.

7. Being a Philly area native

All other snack cakes (Hostess, Drakes) taste HORRIBLE compared to Tastykakes. You can tell Tastykakes are made with real chocolate, etc. as the other ones taste so artificial in comparison.
Was concerned when they got bought out that the new owners would mess with the recipes to make things cheaper or more shelf-stable. So far so good! But if they do change anything **we will know**.

10. Maybe they taste good on the east coast...

...but one cheese-steak place in Seattle carries them, and I thought they tasted terrible - stale and artificial. The former might be explained by the distance, but the latter?

Anyway, it doesn't matter much to me, as I've adopted healthy eating after many years of unhealthy habits, and can't imagine eating any brand's snack cakes except as a rare indulgence.

Can't get them here in WI, except by mail. For me that's probably a good thing. I have type 2 in my old age and access to Tastykakes would not help! They sure are good as I recall.

17. Hostess was UNION, too.

Why do you think the management was trying to blame the unions for their own mismanagement? Their workers were union workers--Teamsters and the baker's union. Your subject line makes it sound like they were not. If you think the management/ownership at Tastykakes wouldn't be thrilled if their workers' union disappeared, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

BTW, I don't eat either of these junk products, so I really don't care which is supposedly "better".

33. Mismanagement

implies they weren't intentionally gutting the company like the predatory hedge fund venture capitalists that they are.

27. Tastykake butterscotch krimpets ... even if your mouth will only open a small amount ...

because you were 7 years old and crashed on your bike, and you needed 10 stitches in your chin ... you can flatten a krimpet so that you can eat it.

I know ... I've been there.

Tastykake Krimpets saved my life.

34. Very interesting.

I had no idea all those brands came from the same baker. I'm pretty sure that most, if not all of the employees here in Southeast are NOT under union contracts.
