1. Point of order

How can #5 be a self portrait?

2. I don't know but it is featured as such so I guess he set up the shot...

I do imagine that photos can be self done...but I don't know if I could do it!

On edit: there's actually a hint for you here...

3. At least Kubrick is holding a camera

That may be an actuator bulb in #5's hand

I thought it was a tube of paint

11. #1: Alex Katz, Sweatshirt II

I lucked out and found it only because it reminded me of another Katz self-portrait.

You are in the correct century with Michaelangelo, tho...

27. It looked like Raphael from other depictions

But I didn't think it would be him because he'd done a famous self-portrait that is similar. So I thought it was a self-portrait by another artist done as a kind of homage to Raphael--and Raphael himself was the last possibility i checked.

And, of course, I rushed to post the answer before going back for more info on the painting. What do you know about it?

29. It is a recently recovered painting that disappeared from Poland after WW2.

Last edited Fri Nov 16, 2012, 08:27 PM - Edit history (1)

Some art historians think it is actually of a woman, posing as Raphael!

It's nice that, whatever it is, it has been recovered from the awful catastrophe of WW2! For that I am grateful...and how I love the angle of that cap on the back of his head!

31. Remember the the young Lords, the Stuarts of England?

CTyankee... The attention paid to every detail in the fabric, as well as the very elegant hand shapes, reminded me of the painting of the Stuart brothers who died in the English Civil War. We had it in the challenge a while back. I knew that van Dyck had painted the two brothers Stuart. so had him in mind. Here it is for reference:
http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/d/dyck_van/2portrai/stuarts.html

Searched on google images for van Dyck self portrait and there it was. So it was a guess. An art challenge educated guess.

32. I actually think he doesn't look like what I would imagine him to look like!

He looks far from the dandies that he painted in the work you referenced...softer, with a lot less bravuro...I actually had to double check when I saw this portrait...what he's wearing is not as fancy either...

33. well...

All that I can tell you is that those two details -- the hands and the very detailed drapes/folds in the fabric, especially in the white silky shirt of the self portrait, had me thinking "this reminds me of the Stuart brothers."

That told me who the artist was, and I was happy to confirm it with a search!

Nice challenge as always CTyankee.
