Peter King to give up Homeland Security chairmanship

http://www.newsday.com/news/nation/king-to-give-up-homeland-security-chairmanship-1.4227903

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) said Thursday that he will have to give up his post as chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee next year because of his party's term-limit rule.

King said he's already overstayed the rule's six-year limit -- he's been the committee's top Republican for more than seven years, after first taking the gavel in September 2005.

Come January, King will lose the "bully pulpit" he used to help keep 9/11 plotter Khalid Sheik Muhammad's trial out of Manhattan, keep Guantanamo Bay's prison open, and draw worldwide attention and controversy with hearings on American Muslims and terrorism.

(snip)
Farhana Khera, executive director of the lawyer's group Muslim Advocates, said she "breathed a sigh of relief" at the news. She said King's hearings were a "witch hunt" that sowed "fear and hatred towards American Muslims."

2. The good news is that RWNJ Peter King is no longer HS chair

The bad news is that someone even more batshit crazy might take over.

5. Senator or Governor is all there is, and he might...

think about a run against Schumer.

Schumer is far from my favorite Senator, (he defines pandering with some groups) but he comes through most of the time. The thought of Senator King, though, really makes me gag.

Governor King? Whadda laugh! The NY Governor is one of the weakest in the country and rarely has any more than a bully pulpit to work with. All the power is with the leadership in the legislature. Now, if King could stand the demotion, he could be really scary running the state senate.

Doubt he would ever be able to get enough votes for any of those positions.

10. I doubt it, too, but...

everyone thinks about a "promotion" when the chance comes up. I've already been involved in three such local campaigns out here.

I don't doubt for a minute he's got feelers out with state GOP leaders, and if he's got any support at all he'll go for Phase II. He might be considered as a sacrificial candidate against Schumer.

Again, the NY governor is so weak and useless I don't care if he runs, even if he wins. I do care who runs the legislature, though. I care a lot and we've got some people running again to displace a few Republicans.

ii

Methinks if King goes for it, he'll be out by the second round and we'll hear no more about it. He's got his people in Nassu, but I doubt anyone else in the state takes him seriously.

12. There is one other position, one of importance-

and with Bloomberg not running again, and a possibly major fight on the democratic/liberal side there may be a showdown of Ray Kelly vs. Peter King for the republican nomination for Mayor.

While Bloomberg was (IMHO) a liberal running in disguise other than the Dem he always used to be, King would be a rare ultra conservative/neo-con to the right (Kelly would ironically be considered more liberal). King might get Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn & Queens running against say Christine Quinn who most likely(but not assured) would be the Democrat.

Quinn would need to develop a bigger base outside of Manhattan to be assured of winning, and it is possible there could be a racial divide if the primary is bitter.
There are parts of Brooklyn and Queens that are sexist.(and of course racist).(and a majority of Staten Island).

As Schumer is the #1 friend of Israel in the senate, I sincerely doubt King(also a big friend of Israel, but not a Jewish person himself) could beat Schumer figuring he will run again.

We would be so lucky if he just slinked away to a high paying lobby job or something.
But remember he flirted briefly with running for President laughable as that idea was.

14. That's a stretch-- He might have a chance, but...

not only is NYC's mayor always been the end of the line for politicians, and he'd be term limited, the mayor actually has to work and can't grandstand holding bullshit hearings.

7. good to hear

I have been trying to vote out this fuckwad out for as long as I have been able to vote in the district. Sadly, this year the newly gerrymandered congressional district plucked him out of my grip. I was pissed.

Still hope he loses next cycle.

11. I don't like that guy at all.

He gives me the creeps. I wish new yorkers would vote him out of office. I wish he's end up in some sort of scandal that takes him out of politics or even society for a while.
