Denny's is the latest to take Obamacare out on its employees. Don't go there!

I suggest that all these eateries that we are boycotting, if their business does go down and if you feel so inclined to drop in one occasionally and give a wait staff member a tip. But wait to see if their businesses decrease first. That's my 2 cents.

John Metz, Denny's Franchisee And Hurricane Grill & Wings Owner, Imposes Surcharge For Obamacare

John Metz said he will add a 5 percent surcharge to customers' bills to offset what he said are the increased costs of Obamacare, along with reducing his employees' hours.

While some business owners threaten to cut workers' hours to avoid paying for their health care, a West Palm Beach, Fla., restaurant owner is going even further. John Metz said he will add a 5 percent surcharge to customers' bills to offset what he said are the increased costs of Obamacare, along with reducing his employees' hours

"If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare," Metz told The Huffington Post. "Although it may sound terrible that I'm doing this, it's the only alternative. I've got to pass the cost on to the customer."

ME - He sounds like a real "hate the 47% club member" to me. He failed to mention that besides paying the extra cost and tipping the wait staff off of that money or taking the money from the wait staff who are the "primary beneficiary of Obamacare" there is another choice. Read the menu, give your wait staff a tip and go somewhere else.

1. We should find out which Denny's...the ones he has..not all Denny's...

I have a feeling they're all down south since that's where he is.

2. Denny’s Pancakes With a Side of Obamacare Tax? Not Yet

Fans of the Grand Slam breakfast, fear not. The Denny’s franchise owner who told a reporter that he would be adding a 5 percent “Obamacare” surcharge to diners’ meals has walked back that statement.

8. He is still cutting employees hours. That was the worst part and the part that I highlighted

But now representatives for Metz are walking back those statements, telling ABC News in a statement that while Metz will cut back hours his employees work, the 5 percent surcharge was merely speculation, and never was his actual intention.

“Hurricane Grill & Wings will be implementing the 28 hour rule in all corporately owned and operated restaurants starting in Q1 of 2013. The 5 percent surcharge mentioned in various online outlets is pure speculation and only a potential option should the law be re-written to include full-time equivalents,” the statement read. “The surcharge is not to be implemented or considered at this time.”

I'd rather he put a frigging surcharge than take it out on his employees.

4. Denny's is disgusting anyways.

I much prefer local Mom & Pop kitchens. Better food, quality, flavor and price.

12. If a company has over 50 full time employees they have to provide insurance for them.

That is why he is cutting their hours. So I guess all his full time employees are going just under the weekly hours limit because he doesn't want to pay for their health care.

15. Employers with over 50 employees have to offer it or pay a fine

The individual has to purchase it if the employer doesn't offer it.
Small employers get subsidies/reduced rates, as do lower income workers.

6. Wasn't it Denny's that had all the trouble with the minority population?

Now that the minority is the majority, and Denny's food is still pretty cheap & crappy (literally - diarrhea inducing), they'd better know their clientele or risk going out of business.

16. I just sent a letter.

I don't care if this was just some investor or franchise owner being an asshole. Corporate needs to be aware of this. If any foodservice place is going to subject me to potential illness because their employees are paid so little they can't take a day off when sick and can't have a guarantee of basic healthcare, I won't go there. Why should I risk getting sick, when the bastards that own these franchises don't care enough about basic health issues to make sure their employees don't pass on disease, so they can save a few pennies? SKROO them.

17. My daughter has a friend whose dad owns several

Dennys franchises in Calif. and Hawaii. He drives around in a top of the line Mercedes, owns a million plus dollar waterfront home, has the money to put two kids through college simultaneously without breaking a sweat, and treats the family to lavish vacations yearly. I seriously doubt coughing up a few extra bucks to provide health care benefits for his employees is going to break him or anyone else who has the money to buy and run a business. It's the least they can do.

18. I used to work at Dennys and

this is not really new as they did this same thing many years ago. I worked as a waitress at one in Boulder co. and then in Washington State and they made certain that people only worked part time. In fact there was one instance when I was the only Bartender trained and had to work over 40 hours so, rather than let corporate know this, the manager paid me out of his own pocket so that he would not lose his bonus. Please treat your waitresses and waiters well as they really have to put up with a lot of B.S. not only from customers but sometimes from management. I am so glad I no longer need to work in that industry!

20. As with Applebee's, this is an individual franchise order

Corporate needs to smack them both down hard for damaging the brand.

22. To be fair to Moons Over My Hammy, Inc.....

Metz is an independent franchisor of the Denny's brand, and not necessarily affiliated with corporate.
