Jindal slams Romney for 'gifts' comment about minorities, young voters

November 14th, 2012

(CNN) – Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana fiercely shot back at Mitt Romney’s claim Wednesday that President Barack Obama outmatched the 2012 Republican presidential nominee by offering "gifts" to African-Americans, Hispanics and young voters.

“I absolutely reject that notion,” Jindal, who was a surrogate for Romney’s campaign, said at the Republican Governors Association conference in Las Vegas. “I think that's absolutely wrong.”

“I don't think that represents where we are as a party and where we're going as a party,” he continued. “That has got to be one of the most fundamental takeaways from this election.

<snip>

But Jindal, when asked about Romney’s remarks, said in order for the GOP to be “competitive,” it has to “go after 100 percent of the votes, not 53 percent. We need to go after every single vote.”

Jindal’s criticism seemed to take latent swipes at Romney’s “47%” comments that were secretly recorded earlier this year. At a May fund-raiser, Romney argued that nearly half of Americans were “victims” who were “dependent” on the government. Those voters, he argued, sided with Obama.

A spokesperson for Romney, who has stayed away from the public spotlight since losing the election last week, did not return a request for comment about the call.

1. Thanks for the comments after the election, when everyone else is dogpiling on Romney.

I'm not defending Rmoney (spelled that way on purpose) but where were you with these comments in October, when news of them was first made?

Still trapped in the GOP bubble?

2. c'mon. I'm not defending Jindal here but one could hardly expect him

to slam Romney prior to the election.

3. Wow...a perfect example of "true colors" of Romney. Evidently lots of

others are criticizing him now - geesh, including KKKarl. MoJo was just talking about this. Love it.

I only wish it had been Ryan who said this. But, thank god he's tainted by this too.

I hope these repukes truly mean what they are saying, that Romney's view is just plain wrong. Maybe that's too much to ask that they actually care about anyone...vs. just being smart politically.

7. Exactly

The Republicans are mad their mouths keep getting them in trouble. They are sounding the alarm to tell everyone to shut up so mass amnesia will set in for the 2014 elections.

11. How did they get this way? Remember the Bush years? All the minions were perfectly under

control - there were no mistakes, no gaffes.

Who kept the message in line then? Rove? Cheney?

I keep having to pinch myself because they never screwed up before and since Romney started running - it's just been fabulous.

5. Now that Romney won't be handing out any gifts of his own...

...he's being cut loose from the guys looking out for their own careers.

6. Well, Jindal is about 40 which is young by Republican politician standards, and he isn't white...

so I am not surprised that he's a bit sick of such comments!

Not that it will stop him from being a Republican.

12. I lived in Nola for 3 years. Best I remember he supported forced sterilization of

sex offenders. This may be a controversial subject...but I don't like it.

8. Only Rmoney would be stunned and upset

that the President would enact policies that his voters like during an election year. I think this is one of the first chapters in the "how to win elections 101" textbook. Maybe Jindal passed the class.

9. “I don't think that represents where we are as a party and where we're going as a party,”

Bullshit!

It's exactly the Republican Party's current position.

Where the hell was Jindal before the election? Oh, that's right, staging bogus photo-ops for Mitt.

Now that Mitt is irrelevant, Republicans can come out and slam him. They own his shit.
