"David Letterman cost Mitt Romney the presidential election"

A South Florida marketing executive on Monday released emails he says show the real reason Mitt Romney lost the presidential election: Romney’s failure to respond to late night talk show host David Letterman’s unrelenting attacks against the former governor in the form of monologues and comedy bits that portrayed Romney as an out-of-touch rich guy who likes to torture his pet dog by tying him to the roof of the family car.

The emails, sent to high-level Romney campaign staffers, show that...

1. Mitt Romney cost Mitt Romney the presidential election.

Enough with trying to place the blame on others.

2. Am I the only one getting sick of this theme?

Said theme being; "Obama didn't win; Romney lost."

Even in losing, gotta give all the credit to the rich white Republican...

8. Ryan blamed it on a surge of "urban" voters

I guess suppression failed, huh?

And yes, "urban" is a dog whistle.

11. I know "urban" is a dog whistle

Though frankly at this point, their dog whistles are less like dog whistles and more like air raid sirens.

5. So many simplistic explanations

It was the storm, he didn't go on Letterman, the one old Black Panther in Philly stole the election for Obama. They refuse to accept reality.

with his "Pretend President" stuff. LOL

Let them think it was Letterman - they can keep digging themselves that hole to climb in.

A. He didn't go on the Letterman show.
B. He ran against Obama.

27. Didn't he do a "Top 10"?

Guess it was just because he ran against Obama.

Sometimes being a lying, swindling, privileged, pompous ass doesn't get you ahead in politics. Even if you let yourself think you were doing well because you beat out a parade of clowns and lower-level grifters.

...and not seat Dave next to the President, after all. Wouldn't want to confirm the secret this guy stumbled upon.

17. I heard Letterman's monologue when he said Romney would win

He was joking of course.

He said, "Here's the timeline for the election. We'll vote on November 6. They'll do a recount on November 9. And on November 15 the Supreme Court will give it to Romney."

I remember when he tried to get Hillary Clinton on the show for months during the 2008 campaign.

18. Dave said, "If Mitt Romney won't come on this show, don't vote for him"

It got a big laugh and a round of applause. But he actually put the Romney in a box. He couldn't look weak by going on and he looked like a wimp for not going on.

Yup. It was Dave alrighty.

20. It's like Dave told Hillary back in 1999-2000...

"If you want to win you've got to come talk to the big dog (pointing to himself)." She eventually did and she showed a softer side and she ended up winning. Now of course her appearance wasn't the sole reason she won but it didn't hurt her chances either.

Dave would've been tougher on Mitt that Jay was but Dave would have been fair too.

All he had to do is go on the show. Make some self deprecating jokes and show he was a nice guy. Of course when Mitt gets to comfortable that's when he makes a gaffe (remember the "I'm unemployed too" comment). That's probably why he didn't even let O'Reilly interview him towards the end of the campaign.

29. Couple of things:

1. Romney proved that stand-up is not his forte. Look at him at the Al Smith Charity Dinner. Not funny.

2. Letterman eviscerated Romney lackey, Donald Trump, by a clever cross examination of where his ties are manufactured after Trump's explicit diatribe against China and the loss of American jobs.

3. It proves that Romney going on Leno to be simpered at won't neutralize any damage done by Letterman.

The party of personal responsibility refuses to accept any reason for its failures which includes any sort of self-examination.

it started with him not showing his tax returns then he picked Ryan (Ayn), the 47% abortion and voter suppression and besides that why would anyone want these assholes to run the great Country.

34. Yes, and that's also why we got President Gore and President Kerry.

For the past few decades Letterman has been backing the dems with his humor and his interviewing skills.
He probably influenced a few votes and I think that's great!

Clearly he didn't win us an election.

35. David Letterman? What is this, 1992?

Talk about tone deaf and out of touch. Letterman is lucky to get 1.5 million people to tune in any given night. And his audience has aged with him.
