Did I hear correctly? They are cutting food stamps to pass the Farm Bill???

Last edited Wed Nov 14, 2012, 07:21 AM - Edit history (2)

Bill Owens of upstate NY 21st district said this today. He said he thinks the decrease in food stamps will be in the upper 20 billions.

Edit: liberalandproud reminded me it was to pass the Farm Bill, not to pass tax curs, as I originally posted. So we are cutting food stamps to pass a Farm Bill? What is wrong with this picture?

22. Farm Bill? You mean money to some "farmers" collecting huge subsidies for not growing anything?

Formant farm land is selling at premium rates to developers and others who want the subsidies that go along with being labeled a "farmer." Meanwhile real family farmers are catching hell trying to eek out a living for growing real food.

3. Bill Owens said he thought that was the compromise that the congress would reach

since the dems already agreed to cuts of 20 billion or so, and te Repubs want cuts of 30 billion or so.

8. God, you are sarcastic. And ignorant. I said he was just voted congressman from NY 21

For another term. Now don't you feel silly for mocking me?

10. I think the point stands

Some rookie congressman from NY that nobody's really heard of?
Something like this would probably have a few articles springing up on the interwebs. At this point, his statement is speculation at best.

Will it be wrong, in the end? who knows...We'll find out when an actual deal is made, won't we?

And some rookie senator was voted President, in case you hadn't noticed.

5. Hardly any news coverage of this.

I interpret that to mean that the media does not care about poor people.

How wonderful that you are so certain in your ignorance.

Does this type of tone really bother anyone else? Snarky, just to be snarky.

12. In Ohio we are definitely getting a food stamp a cut.

We we told the decision came from the US Dept. of Agriculture.

We were told the State appealed the decision to the USDA but the decision was denied.

11. Some cuts are certain.

http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/11/new-farm-bill-might-help-president-and-congress-scale-fiscal-cliff/

It's only a matter of how much will be cut and which Congress will do the actual cutting.

Really, and when did a personal worry rumination become a thread on DU?

19. The Farm bill passed a bipartisan committee but the GOP controlled House won't bring

it up for a vote. If the House doesn't bring the bill up for a vote it will be the first time in our nation's history a farm bill was not enacted.....It does have a large cut in food stamp program in it although I am not sure just how large it is..
