Jill Kelley & DH ran shady "Cancer" charity

Next time, before you call the FBI because someone goes all Fatal Attraction in your email, consider the other lives that will be touched - including that of your own family!

WASHINGTON -- Tampa, Fla., socialite and military hostess Jill Kelley, one of the women at the center of the ever-expanding scandal that brought down former CIA Director David Petraeus, founded a questionable charity for cancer patients with her surgeon husband, Scott Kelley.

Based out of the couple's mansion, the Doctor Kelley Cancer Foundation claimed on its tax forms that it "shall be operated exclusively to conduct cancer research and to grant wishes to terminally ill adult cancer patients."

From the records, it appears that the charity fell far short of its mission. While the origins of the seed money used to start the charity in 2007 are unclear, financial records reviewed by The Huffington Post reveal that the group spent all of its money not on research, but on parties, entertainment, travel and attorney fees.

By the end of 2007, the charity had gone bankrupt, having conveniently spent exactly the same amount of money, $157,284, as it started with -- not a dollar more, according to its 990 financial form. Of that, $43,317 was billed as "Meals and Entertainment," $38,610 was assigned to "Travel," another $25,013 was spent on legal fees, and $8,822 went to "Automotive Expenses."

The Kelleys also listed smaller expenses that appear excessive for a charity operating from a private home, including $12,807 for office expenses and supplies, and $7,854 on utilities and telephones.

1. And yet she attended the 2011 Military Ball.

A partial Guest List:

As for the Army Ball, there were 45 General-level officers on the list (most were with their spouses, and some were retired), from the USA, Great Britain, Australia and Canada.

Here's a sampling of the names on the VIP invite list with the Kelleys, and their roles at the time (April 2011):

Military officers:

General James Mattis, USMC, Commander, USCENTCOM
Admiral Eric Olson, USN, Commander, USSOCOM
Lieutenant General John Allen, USMC, Deputy Commander, USCENTCOM
Lieutenant General David Fridovich, USA, Deputy Commander, USSOCOM
Major General Joseph Votel, USA, Chief of Staff, USSOCOM
Major General Michael Jones, USA, Chief of Staff, USCENTCOM
Major General Charles Cleveland, USA, Commander, SOCCENT
Major General Clive "Chip" Chapman, GBR, Sr. British Military Adviser, USCENTCOM
Civic leaders:

Rick Scott, Governor, State of Florida
Marco Rubio, U.S. Senator
Bill Nelson, U.S. Senator
Kathy Castor, Congresswoman, 11th District
C.W. "Bill" Young, Congressman, 10th District
Artheia Joyner, State Senator, District 18
Bob Buckhom, Mayor of Tampa
Bill Foster, Mayor of St. Petersburg

Even better from the Guardian -

A former member of the general's military staff told the Washington Post that Kelley was a "self-appointed" go-between for US central command officers in Florida and Middle East government officials. Kelley and her siblings were born in Lebanon and brought to the US as small children.

So many targets so little time.

I think Jill and her sister (and one or both spouses) are full on con artists.

11. Starting to think that as well!

That, or in the bubble of "but don't you know who I am" entitlement.

Jersey Shore couldn't sell this plot.

6. What were they doing with their money?

The husband is a surgeon so I suppose he makes some money. They are more than $2 million in debt to Regions Bank alone.

10. I was just saying to a coworker today that I really feel for these husbands

Dr Kelley and Dr Broadwell both have thriving practices in their communities. What it must be like to see patients right now with all the media over every step the families take over all of this drama.

13. YessireeBub!

From the WaPo:

At the parties Jill Kelley hosted at her Tampa mansion, guests were frequently treated to the indulgences of celebrity life: valet parking, string quartets on the lawn, premium cigars and champagne, and caviar-laden buffets.

The main recipients of the largesse were military brass ó including some of the nationís most senior commanders ó based at nearby MacDill Air Force Base

From HuffPo:

In her adopted hometown of Tampa, Jill Kelley was well known for her glamorous parties and close ties to top military brass. String quartets, expensive cigars and lavish spreads were reportedly features of Kelley's hospitality. Now her role as a sort of one-woman USO has come under scrutiny with the revelation of her links to the scandal that has spurred Petraeus' resignation and started a second investigation into the conduct of another high-ranking general.

It's not Kelley's public efforts but her private ones that have caused the most stir.

16. "valet parking, string quartets" - but why?

Is either of the Kelleys in the military or trying to gain favor of the military such as a contract? What could they possibly gain by pissing away millions by entertaining Generals? I guess Iím a cynical person but that kind of entertaining is usually done to advance someoneís interests and not as a hobby, unless the wife is some kind of obsessed military groupie.

19. Most certainly

your point/question is valid. they MUST have had an ulterior motive since the Dr husbands didn't seem to doing much doctoring if they went broke so fast, That part is starting to smell fishy too, now that more is known about them. And if the sister is an attorney for high-level whistleblowers, as has been reported, how come she's broke too? Gotta wonder about that. I smell a hint of espionage.

Mow I'm beginning to wonder who was "outing" whom... unless it's all in the same script designed to confound onlookers. The only thing that makes sense for such activity, parties etc., beyond the covert concepts is that they may have thought they could loosen some hefty donations from the brass in the neighborhood to fund their wayward nonprofit, but that's a pretty thin idea.
