Koch brother tips doormen $50 FOR THE WHOLE YEAR at his luxurious Park Avenue Building
http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/park-avenue/
On PBS this week - expose about the billionaires living in a super rich park avenue building (rockerfeller lived there) One staff member - face hidden - said that Koch Brother (not sure which one) was the cheapest. Has them load heavy luggage into his car without out so much as a smile. Tip is $50 per year. FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. For comparison - doorman expect a $1000 tip for year per occupant in a building of that type.

5. The staff talk about how there can be "no mistakes" in that building, or they will get fired.
|
They have to know who wants to open their own door, who sits in the front of the car, who sits in the passenger seat, etc.

Last edited Tue Nov 13, 2012, 04:13 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) A good satirical example of this was in the movie "Trading Spaces" where two wealthy, commodity trading brothers, make a bet that results in ruined lives. The bet is for fifty cents. That's how they roll. I once had a client, a multi-millionaire, who was pretty much in the same league as the Walton family for being part of a founding family of a large drug store chain. He thought a lovely Christmas present for me was to present me with half used perfume bottles from the cosmetic counter of one of his stores that were put out for women to sample. He brought them in a box with a ribbon tied on it. Sure, it was good stuff like Chanel, but I was really astounded and then appalled.

Excellent documentary.
I believe that was also part of the sentiment that made people so angry with Bloomberg over the marathon . NYC has become more divided than I can remember. It almost resembles the NYC back at the turn of the century during the industrial age. The uber rich in gilded carriages while the rest made 3 cents per hour. |

29. Some of the worst tippers are the wealthy. We give our pool guys a crisp $100.00 bill each during
|
the holidays....$50.00 check for 12 months of carrying and loading their luggage, providing security in the lobby, announcing visitors, taking delivery of parcels and kissing their wrinkled old asses? I knew these guys were dirt bags, but I just didn't realize how much dirt was in each "bag." The old Skinflints.

Though I have to admit, I'm shocked that $1000 is a normal tip for doormen in "a building of that type". And if this is "normal", it also says that there are a lot of reasonably generous rich people out there.

|
There are outliers, yes. But between the art world here and Silicon Valley money, I've met many 1%ers and they all love discounts. Middle class folks or wealthy people who used to have to struggle tend to be more generous. Your conservative person with money thinks they are doing you a favor by making you struggle for every dime. Hustling makes you creative and competitive, don't you know.
