Oliver Stone on Petraeus

This is damning stuff. Oliver Stone is the first person that hasn't spoke of Petraeus as if he's a God. Love the way
he calls all the medals he wears when he speaks before congress as "fruit salad." We have dodged a bullet having
Petraeus gone as head of the CIA.

1. I'm now a fan of Piers Morgan...

and I must say CNN also did a brilliant job covering the election, with the zoom-in by county results and what not.

2. General George Marshall

One of my most favorite generals of all time.

I pointed out years ago Petraeus was like a soviet general displaying his medals.

14. He wasn't in a dress uniform

he also was not required to wear the full size medal.

Marshal chose not to he use the full size medal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dress_uniform

Marshall was a million times a better general and soldier than what Betrayus was.

EVeryone considered Petraus a SHOWBOAT commander.

19. The picture in the original post of Petraus is a Class A Dress Uniform.

I completely agree that Marshall was a better soldier and general. It still does not negate the fact that any one wearing a Class A Dress Uniform is required to wear all medals and ribbons earned. The reason Petraus looks like a fruit salad is that he's had a lot more chances to earn ribbons because we've been involved in more conflicts.

33. There's no option to wear miniature medals with that uniform

Miniatures may be worn only on formal uniforms (not dress greens) for formal ceremonies and occasions.

What he is wearing in the photo are not full-size medals (which have a metallic disc suspended from a larger ribbon), but the standard ribbons representing those medals.

And he is wearing oak leaf clusters on some of those ribbons to indicate multiple awards of the same medal.

One reason why Petraeus has so much fruit salad is that, in addition to his U.S. military medals, many of those ribbons are for medals awarded by foreign governments and by the State Dept.

I mean, was he in charge when he was awarded the medals? Did he decide when to give medals and for what?

3. MM Hastings also did a damning article on him

http://www.buzzfeed.com/mhastings/the-sins-of-general-david-petraeus
Petraeus was so convincing on Baghdad that he manipulated President Obama into trying the same thing in Kabul. In Afghanistan, he first underhandedly pushed the White House into escalating the war in September 2009 (calling up columnists to “box” the president in) and waged a full-on leak campaign to undermine the White House policy process. Petraeus famously warned his staff that the White House was “fucking” with the wrong guy.

It was an interesting interview. I was struck by how Stone compared what Petraeus did to the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

8. I'm don't know what posessed Obama to keep this guy around to begin with...

...but it seems that putting him in charge of the CIA was meant to box him in and set him up for this kind of fall; in other words, Petraeus got a dose of his own poison. Crucifying him with a sex scandal means that more sensitive areas like state secrets or issues of infighting and policy sabotage get left off the media table for the most part. At least for now.

11. Interesting questions.....

My favorite, assuming possibly that we can credit President Obama as being a better Chess player (and Commander) that if they "set him up" using Petraeus against himself, is that Obama's hands are clean. But better yet...that the President had Petraeus's wife Holly, the daughter of whom many would say was of a great General, General William Knowlton, held up in shining light, while her cad of a husband has no shining light. A great fall indeed for someone who thought so highly of himself.

9. Petraeus only got the job

We ende up with Petraeus because all of the Generals above him took retirement rather than doing George Bush's and Dick Cheney's bidding in the war with Iraq and Afghanistan! A lot of good Generals left until they reached the bottom of the barrel and settled on King David. And his fruit salad is embarrassing especially that he wears everyone of them! He is a bloated wind bag!

13. Yes, we dodged a bullet, again.

Large parts of the media love military despotism, they promote people like Petraeus and MacArthur going all the way back to George Washington. It's only been luck that has kept us from having one with a great desire to be a dictator come to power. We did have Jackson and his genocidal campaign and Grant and his inept, corrupt administration but they didn't want to be dictators. I don't have the same feeling about several of the more recent contenders for power. Petraeus seems to me to be one of the more dangerous.

It's time to get the damned media out of the cosy relationship they've got with the generals and the spies and the rest of the dodgier parts of the government. If I had my way they'd never, ever be allowed to socialize with them. Maybe they should be considered to be spokesmen for them if they cross the line into getting close to them because that's what they become. I don't see any reason to consider people like that to be journalists.
