30. Just think, Bain got millions in government aid in their first decade.
|
Most businesses get government funding or assistance, tax credits, contracts, etc. to help the company expand or to survive during times of blight. Then, these new companies strong-arm the states, playing one off for another, to pay virtually no state or local taxes.

76. In some cases, the companies can keep the state tax paid by their employees
|
Last edited Tue Nov 13, 2012, 10:52 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) "Taxed by the Boss"
From April, 2012-- Across the United States more than 2,700 companies are collecting state income taxes from hundreds of thousands of workers – and are keeping the money with the states’ approval, says an eye-opening report published on Thursday.
The report from Good Jobs First, a nonprofit taxpayer watchdog organization funded by Ford, Surdna and other major foundations, identifies 16 states that let companies divert some or all of the state income taxes deducted from workers’ paychecks. None of the states requires notifying the workers, whose withholdings are treated as taxes they paid. General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Procter & Gamble, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and AMC Theatres enjoy deals to keep state taxes deducted from their workers’ paychecks, the report shows. Foreign companies also enjoy such arrangements, including Electrolux, Nissan, Toyota and a host of Canadian, Japanese and European banks, Good Jobs First says. Why do state governments do this? Public records show that large companies often pay little or no state income tax in states where they have large operations, as this column has documented. Some companies get discounts on property, sales and other taxes. So how to provide even more subsidies without writing a check? Simple. Let corporations keep the state income taxes deducted from their workers’ paychecks for up to 25 years. It was not always this way. Letting companies keep their workers’ state taxes apparently began in Kentucky two decades ago as a way to retain jobs. http://blogs.reuters.com/david-cay-johnston/2012/04/12/taxed-by-the-boss/ |

The banks and financial implosion. It is a question of not cutting your nose off to spite your face
However, it can be legitimately argued that the people who put a company into that position should not be left in charge |

29. Agree on one point, people who mismanaged a business into bankruptcy should not be left in charge
|
and I would add not make obscene profits from their mismanagement.
If I as a farmer mismanage my farm into bankruptcy then I lose everything and some better farmer can buy my land and turn it into a profitable enterprise. IMO that also holds true for multinational corporations. If GM fails, then let Hyundai, Honda, Mercedes or some other corporate office take over. We could make all the successful management staff US citizens in five years if they can turn GM around. That's immigration reform anyone should be able to support. |

33. I’m not sure we disagree. Govt. can’t exist without taxes and taxes can’t exist without profits on
|
products and services.
There are two challenges for a free society, first operate businesses for profits, and second spend profits wisely. The second goal has two parts, invest some part of today’s profits to make businesses profitable in the future and consume the remainder of today’s profits in some fair manner. IMO government and businesses don’t always make wise decisions. |

Here's a very simple answer you could have found if you had just realized Google is your friend: GM declared bankruptcy when they couldn't get loans from the big new york banks. The government lent them money until they could restructure themselves. The big banks who held gm bonds wouldn't agree to refinancing so GM had to file. The situation now is pretty good. They have refinanced their loans, got rid of Hummer and Saab, closed Pontiac and Saturn. They should emerge from bankruptcy this summer. Many feared that people wouldn't buy cars while gm was in bankruptcy but that hasn't been the case. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100221101402AAsmSLf And furthermore, two of the LOUDEST voices against the GM loans were Bob Corker and Richard Shelby whose states had huge foreign transplant factories that would have benefited from GM not being "bailed out". In the end, they should have been charged with treason. Have a nice uninformed life. By the way, when it comes to GM, you should maybe be talking about something you really know about. It's obvious you know nothing about GM. |

And they opened one up just down the hill from me. Papa John's who? Between Little Caesar's, Round Table (expensive but very good), and another great local chain whose owner we know personally, never mind the occasional restaurant pizza choices, there's no need to patronize Schlatter.

We used to have Little Caesars delivered when we had drunkfests and needed a grip o' pizzas for what little money we had left.
I don't think anyone even noticed how they tasted. |

Sorry, just because they donate to Democrats doesn't change the fact that they are the worst of the chain pizza places.

It can be done. Anyone who says otherwise is a greedy lying hack. Given the incentives built into the law for small businesses, it would seem that good companies that value workers would do everything to provide health care benefits. |

Why? UNION shop. Big Supermarket chain in I believe 4 states in the NE, corporate offices in New York. I don't remember the exact name. It was something like United Grocery Workers of America. Yes, they are STILL Union today. They have a sign in their windows saying that are a Union Shop.

But last night I drug my ass out of a warm bed to go get Little Caesar's because they don't deliver. I had a looooong conversation with the manager about a range of political issues. Finally I mentioned why I got of bed for one of their pizzas when Papa John's (my one time employer) tastes better (for a chain) and delivers. I told her that John Rattner's statements really pissed me off because 10 years ago I was kept as a sub 40 hour employee to prevent me from getting benefits and now he's lowering the bar to 30 prevent the company from paying for their employees' healthcare.
She floored me when she said that it's happening with Little Caesar's as well, AND that her hours are being cut to 25 despite the fact that she has insurance through her husbands job (good thing since she's pregnant). She said that the company has regional franchisees like most chains and only provides benefits to the GM and Asst-GM. Needless to say I was pissed last night and am still pissed. One because I got out of bed, and two because I wanted to believe that there was a chain restaurant that wasn't treating their employees like shit. I've believed that corporations were amoral for sometime, but this shows intent. Fuck Little Caesar's...and their delicious crazy bread! |
