This was just a post on my Facebook from a distant relative.

Could this be true? I don't know this person well at all so don't know how much of a RWNJ she is. Obviously she doesn't like our President. This is the 2nd time she's posted something about her son, who just enlisted, not being able to vote. She posted before election that he had said he wouldn't be allowed to vote. It seems too weird to me. I don't think he's on the front lines of Afghanistan or anything. He just left as a new enlistee into the Marines a couple of months ago.

This is what she posted. "So, I just got off the phone with my son. It's official none of the men or women got to vote!!! I think if they did Mr Obama may not be in office. Maybe that was the plan, in so mad right now"

1. I call bullshit on that one.

Military has the opportunity to vote absentee and overseas at no cost.

2. he's a newbie in training? here's your answer

They will recieve information on voting by absentee while they are in training. The military, as a whole, places alot of emphasis on absentee voting.

If you're wondering if they'll set up a voting booth or station..no they won't do that.
They'll be able to vote via absentee during their free time at night.

Rigger is correct though, your son should register prior to going and just have you forward the mail to him.

Make sure you place it in a care package filled with ridiculus stuff. Hair gel, stuffed animal, etc...

3. Well

there is not enough info to decide if she is full of crock or not.

Like WHERE he is registered to vote? Is he registered in his home state? If he is did he ask for an absentee ballot.

If he registered where he is now located, what are their election laws? Did he register before the deadline?

I know several people in the military who had no problem with voting, either absentee or in person. I think she is full of shit.

17. There are many, many, MANY military personnel that had absolutely NO PROBLEMS voting!

I believe the military had special hotlines set up for service people to: (1) make sure they knew how to vote; and (2) report any irregularities.

I'm leaning quite strongly towards CROCK OF SHIT.

6. She's assuming that the military would all vote against Obama

From what I've heard and read, the officer corps tends to vote Republican, but that's not the case for the enlisted personnel.

7. Too dumb to figure out how to vote absentee?

Did he think someone would come to him to ask him if he wanted to vote and then present him with a ballot?

9. Aren't you glad this relative doesn't live across the street?

Having her at a distance is much better I would guess.

10. I've heard this from a few butt-hurt republicans lately. Total BS.

The absentee voting process for both civilians and military is handled by the Secretaries of State in each state. I think that most of the critical swing states have republican SOS's so as usual...they are full of shit. When will these people stop with their bull shit?!?!

18. Yes, there are a lot of baseless claims being thrown out there

I think it is either an intentional strategy or case of collective denial because none of these claims include any specific details. If someone had a negative voting experience, they would have a detailed account of what happened and how or why they were unable to vote or their vote wasn't counted. I know someone whose ballot was initially rejected due to a claimed signature mismatch. He had to update his signature. Everything worked out in this case but the point is that he can relate the details of what happened with specifics and he has documentation to back up his account.

12. That's what I thought-that it was a bunch of BS.

He either is lying to her because he didn't vote or she is just trying to stir up crap on Facebook. She is a very distant relative on my husband's side who I just a couple of months ago became reacquainted with on Facebook. They are from W. Va., which should explain their whole reasoning process. Thanks for everyone's info. I knew it was probably BS but had to discuss it with my experts here on DU.

14. This was my response to her. I included a link to the website that was noted above.

"This is where he would have had to go to request an absentee ballot. Military absentee ballots are a large part of the election process. No one is purposely excluded."

We'll see what kind of a response I get from her & the others on her thread who were just dissing the President for not allowing service members to vote.

This from the same lying fucking republicans, who spread their bullshit lies as this one that Obama didn't want soldiers to vote...

Just another of the hundreds of republican bullshit tactics to paint Obama as "hating his country & not patriotic" to their fellow haters as well as the UNIFORMED!!!

(Like your 'relative').

20. Did he send in for an absentee ballot?

If not then he would have been able to vote. While you are in the service, your home of record is usually where you were when you enlisted.

This was very clear when I was in the navy.
