I seek a world where there ARE NO veterans anymore, and no more Veterans Day

Not because I don't like veterans.

But because our military is unnecessary.

Seriously - why the bases ALL OVER THE WORLD?????

Why do we still need bases in Germany? Scotland? Are we worried about the vengeful spirit of William Wallace storming Maine?

Why do we need so many bases here?

Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to have a homeland civil defense that cleans up after storms, etc.

But we don't need a WWIII-class military...

There is so much beauty in nature, so much wisdom in the words of an elderly.. so much joy and zest for life in the eyes of a child.. so much to be happy and greatful for, even in the most dire situations

It's unwritten - why damn ourselves to hate and death?

One person can make a difference. I know it sounds hokey, pollyanna and stupid but it is true.

I learned that lesson right when I needed it.

More suffering, more fighting, more trashing the planet. This is the thing I am most positive of.

To me it's a terrible shame our species will never have peace, and will not take enough care of it's planet to insure it's own future.

I wish war was NEVER needed, but instead it will NEVER ever end.

Military out!

Veterans day we will always have and should. We can't just pretend history never happened and that people didn't give their lives.

We have our work ahead of us taking care of the thousands of severely wounded veterans we already have. Many would never had survived if there had not been so many advances in battlefield medicine.

Although evil is really just a nice way of summing up the infinite number of reasons for why we go to war.

War is bad, no argument there. The fact is, it will never leave this world. Ever. And that's okay. If you can't stop something, you can at least try to change its nature, or mitigate it.

And another thing. The bases all over the world that one poster seems so confused over: If they all disappeared, you would scarcely believe the bloodshed that would follow in some places. The military acts as a preventer of aggression as well. The simplistic views that bases=bad is just that.

God bless all veterans, past, present, and future!

I refuse to accept that it does.

AND I would venture to say human nature is not, Thomas Hobbes be damned, a state of war.

Hobbes was nasty, brutish and short

We can always overcome our differences, as long as we can empathize and reason.

But that's like saying, "We can always fly, as soon as we grow wings and sprout feathers". In short, we can't. I firmly believe that. The fact of the matter is, war is primarily caused by one party being unsatisfied with their position to such a degree that they seek to revise the status-quo. The most expedient way to do that is through violence (And even when violence isn't chosen as the first option, it will be the last, should the other avenues not bring them their goal).

Whether it's because a community is running out of heating fuel, is tired of being looked down on, can't change a political system to one in their favor, wants more of X, is tired of giving up Y, is compelled to by religion, etc, etc, etc,.....people will still be violent and seek change through that violence. It's a sad truth, but an eternal one.

What government do you propose to dictate to people whom that can and can't breed with? You should realize that such a government would be tyrannical beyond anything that has already been seen on earth. You are proposing that women completely lose control over their reproduction.

The DoD is the biggest trough of corporate welfare in the world, so we will continue to murder people all over the world to keep it overflowing, but that doesn't mean it is necessary.
