FBI: Too Much Autonomy? Shades of Hoover?

Lawmakers Question F.B.I. Handling of Petraeus Affair

By BRIAN KNOWLTON
Published: November 11, 2012

"WASHINGTON — Lawmakers with authority over intelligence and national security expressed consternation on Sunday that the F.B.I. investigation that led to the resignation of David Petraeus as director of central intelligence could have been conducted without the knowledge of officials in the White House or Congress. They also voiced puzzlement that it came to a head within hours of President Obama’s re-election. ...."

1. I remember Hoover and this is nothing like Hoover.

I can't believe the paranoia over this whole thing. It could simply be a case of 3 incredibly stupid and careless people. I would love to know what was in those emails.I have seen similar dramas played out in offices. People bringing just as much ruin to promising careers and destroying their families.

Maybe they weren't told for the same reason President Obama didn't tell them about Bin Laden. Their big fat mouths and they may even have tried to block the investigation. These same politicians were against going after Bin Laden and offending Pakistan. Screw them. I guess Patreus couldn't get help from his connections this time.

5. it's why was Prez Obama apparently not notified until much later; why does the FBI have this degree

freedom and autonomy from oversight?

7. They always have.

Technically they can investigate anyone in the federal government without getting permission. They do not have to contact members of congress. This was actually done to prevent politicians from forcing them to drop investigations. I can bet if they had notified these members of congress this investigation would have been squashed.

I also wonder if this is actually related to Broadwell spying and trying to get the scoop on Benghazi and finding more than she bargained for. Such as there being another mistress in his portfolio.

If this story is true then the fault lies with Patreus and picking such a disturbed mistress and giving her access. It is why he abruptly resigned. He allowed a serious breach of security and is lucky he is not charged.

I wish the President had not asked him to stay on until next year.

8. kicking, b/c what am I missing? why aren't Dems hollering? Cantor was told before the Prez?

guess i'm conspiracy theorizing, but sounds as if the FBI was acting on its own; and was more beholden to republicans than to the Commander in Chief.
