1. I think you might that with regard to Poland

that followed an unsuccessful attempt by the police to keep left and right wing factions apart.

See :

Polish riot police used truncheons in Warsaw on Sunday to break up a crowd of rightwing extremists pelting them with firecrackers and lumps of concrete after a parade to mark the national holiday turned violent.

Thousands of police had earlier lined the streets of the capital to try to stop rightwing nationalists and radical leftwing groups from using the independence day holiday as an opportunity to fight each other.

It was the second year the celebrations had degenerated into violence, underlining the deep gulf between those who want a conservative, religious society that rejects foreign influence and those who want Poland to join the European mainstream.

As demonstrators gathered for the rightwing rally, young men with their faces covered by scarves chanted nationalist slogans and railed against supposed Jewish conspiracies.

2. Thank you for the story!

However, the papers rarely tell the full story, and having marched with Occupy, I know from long experience that papers usually only present the perspective of the system which must be changed, so it pays to read just a little past the words presented...

4. Also, those still photos are from Germany

All the signs are in German, and it seems to be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chorweiler - Köln-Chorweiler , in Cologne.

The video you posted was posted by "PolishPatriots", which has posted other videos today, which are about "The march of independence", or "11 November 2012 - Warsaw - March antifascists the beginning of March" - &feature=relmfu (you can see the anti-fascist symbols in that one).

What gave you the idea those were Polish anti-austerity demonstrations?

5. I'll clarify in the OP; I was not intending to lump the two together under "austerity"

but that's indeed how it looks.
