Something is rotten in the Petraeus Betrayus.

Just perusing the daily headlines:

1. DiFi wasn't told.

Senate Intelligence Committee head wants to know why FBI left her in dark on Petraeus probe

Read more: http://www.calgaryherald.com/entertainment/Senate+Intelligence+Committee+head+wants+know+left+dark+Petraeus/7531992/story.html#ixzz2BvpclsnS

WASHINGTON - The head of the Senate Intelligence Committee says she wants to know why the FBI didn't tell her sooner that agents were investigating an extramarital affair by CIA Director David Petraeus.

Feinstein tells "Fox News Sunday" that she first learned about the matter from the media late last week. Feinstein says she called Petraeus twice on Friday and was dumbstruck when he acknowledged the affair.

The California Democrat says the news was "like a lightning bolt."

2. Cantor knew in October. Surprise.

Spokesman: House majority leader knew of Petraeus matter in October

http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/11/us/petraeus-cia-resignation/

(CNN) -- House majority leader Eric Cantor talked to an FBI official in late October about former CIA Director David Petraeus' involvement in an affair, a spokesman for the congressman told CNN Sunday.

Doug Heye said Cantor had a conversation with the whistleblower about the affair and the national security concerns involved in the matter.

The New York Times reported Saturday that on October 31, Cantor's chief of staff phoned the FBI to inform them about the call between the congressman and the FBI official.

3. I think he kept his yap shut because knowing about the affair is more useful

if Obama got reelected and Cantor can somehow use it in impeachment proceedings.
Cantor seems to be quite Newtie-like in his desire to personally bring down a president.
Not a conspiracy theory, just saying Cantor is demented about his hatred of Obama, it seems to me.

26. Cantor thought it was a win-win

Romney wins, they keep their guys in place and the general and president both owe him for being the good soldier. Outing a RW hero before the election would not have helped Mitt, only hurt a future candidate.

With an Obama win, they get to play the what did he know and when did he know it game. Keep PBO off balance and maybe make Erik look like Mr. tough guy.

As usual, RW tactics and strategies make little sense in the light of day and are out of synch with the US public.

5. If the FBI investigation was ongoing

But they had no particular reason to fear a security breach, then I can see why they kept it in-house until they had a report.

There's not a lot of smoke or fire here.

What the FBI likely found was a seedy little affair that posed no particular threat. They were following up, but it wasn't high priority, and certainly no reason to run back to the Intelligence Committee or the White House or anyone else, at least until a report could be produced. It all looks so "dirty" in retrospect, but this might have simply struck the FBI as a minor issue with no security breach potential.

7. My big issue with this is the leak

they keep referring to the FBI agent as a whistle-blower... he/she isn't, they are leaking information. The Obama WH has had an ongoing issue with sensitive/classified info being leaked. I'm tying these things together. Cantor obviously knows about the leaking, hell, Holder has 2 attorney's investigating some leaks from June (if I recall correctly). As a US representative, doesn't Cantor have a duty to also report this leak, not only to the FBI but the DOJ?

8. He reported the leak to the FBI!

That's exactly what he did.

The leak went to Reichert. Reichert - in a very strange move - passed it on to Cantor. Cantor essentially turned the leak into the FBI Director. Why Cantor should also go to DOJ about this, I'm not clear on. He reported the leak back to the FBI, and I assume the FBI would handle that if any DOJ reporting was necessary.

I think the weirdest move is Reichert's, to be quite honest. Reichert was, of course, the lead detective on the Green River Killer task Force, so he knows the FBI people well, and knows proper procedure. He was also a law enrforcement administrator before becoming a Congressperson: he was Sheriff of King County for eight years!

But instead of going directly back to FBI with an obvious leak regarding an ongoing investigation, he goes to Cantor? Why? Why take this to Cantor? Why doesn't Reichert go to DOJ, or through any of the hundreds of proper channels for reporting something like this? Why take it to Cantor? I think Reichert could be on the hook here, perhaps even criminally. Notice no comment from his people.

10. I think there's a bit of smoke and fire here

maybe not towards Cantor but then again, who knows. I'm sure all the details aren't out there yet. The whole thing is perplexing. The FBI agent shouldn't be telling tales out of school, Reichert shouldn't be talking to Cantor.

12. Cantor is not the only problem.

Several House Republican members and various members of the intelligence agencies were working together on this while keeping it from the WH. I think they were hoping for a change in the WH and thought they could keep a lid on until January and that way Betrayus would not need to leave the agency.

iows - it was a coverup until they could no longer cover it up

It backfired big time on ReTHUGs

The real question is who was involved in the assassination of the Ambassador and the three others.

This is very interesting and I don't believe it's all about an extra-marital affair - looking more like nefarious affairs against the state.

15. Just a (conspiracy) theory

My suspicion comes down on Paula Broadwell, the "biographer" in this piece. That Petraeus was an ass is not beyond question, what is questionable is that he would take on a "biographer" while being an active CIA Director. The affair he was having with "another woman" sounds like a fabrication to me. Broadwell was pressuring him for access to emails, knowing full well that these would be classified. No respectable biographer would do this, and to me it smells like she had gotten him into bed primarily to get access to that information.

By all indications Petraeus was not well liked in the CIA, and for him to so blatantly violate security protocol in this manner likely meant that internally he (and she) were being covertly investigated. After ruling out the possibility that she was a foreign spy, contacts were made into the FBI to determine whether more was known about her there. The alleged whistleblower probably picked up on this and passed it on to Reichart, possibly as a warning. This would only make any real sense if Broadwell was in fact a GOP plant who was attempting to find out information about Benghazi from Petraeus that could be used against Obama. The embassy at Benghazi was a CIA operation - the State Department was simply a cover, and by all indications the attack on the embassy was in fact intended for a purpose beyond random mayhem (the death of the ambassador was an unfortunate side effect - I don't think he was ever an intended target). Broadwell was an espionage amateur who made the mistake about getting greedy in attempting to extort information.

My gut feeling is that this was a black ops campaign by certain elements in the GOP (Rove?) against Obama that came unraveled early. Broadwell is likely now in protective custody, because her life isn't worth squat on the outside. Whoever set this motion is in seriously trouble - this level of espionage, whether done by am American or a foreign national, is punishable by life in prison. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Cantor eventually "resigning to spend time with his family over this", but I don't think this is his operation.

23. Some trouble with your timeline (excellent theory though, very plausible)

The Petraeus biography was published so much earlier this year Broadwell couldn't possibly have been planted by the GOP in order to get info about Benghazi this late in the game.

I can't believe this affair hasn't been going on for a while. She's been with him as his biographer for quite a while - for so long it doesn't make a lot of sense that she would only RECENTLY get into bed with him.

What DOES make sense is that Cantor did recently approach her to try to get into Petraeus' emails about Benghazi exploiting a long time affair that - may or may not have been - "known" by the inner elite power circle who probably keep secret files on this kind of shit. I can see him doing this AND it would make sense that Cantor is involved. I get the feeling he really hates this POTUS.

He probably hired? exploited? pressured? Broadwell to begin snooping and prying to get insider info they can use on the Benghazi thing. They really are unhinged about it.

So much so I'm worried it would have been perfect fodder as an impeachment attempt by the Rethugs.

28. Well, there are few things that need correction. Broadwell was embedded with Petraeus while

he was on active duty in Afghanistan. She met him in 2006. The biography was first published last January, I believe. She was working on that biography while they were in Afghanistan.

According to reports the affair didn't start until after he became Director of the CIA. But they were 'very close' for years before that.

So if her goal was to get information from him, she had years to do so. Several people have said they were not sure why she had so much access to him, while he was on active duty. The cover was her writing his Biography. Also, she was part of the military herself.

The people who I think are the most interesting are the tow 'Kardashians' in Florida. Who are they, how they did they manage to get so much access to top Military Generals and Intelligence personel?

Neither of them have any military background. They were not political fundraisers.

According to reports, Jill Kelley, the woman who reported the anonymous emails to her friend in the FBI (the shirtless guy) was married to a doctor. They moved to Tampa around 2001. There is a gap between that and when they got the incredible access they had. No ordinary person could have been all over the base, Central Command, inviting Generals and other top military people to their home for parties. Especially at a time when security was supposed to be a top priority.

Both Gen. Allen and Petraeus went out of their way to try to help the twin sister in her custody battle, which we know from those records. Why on earth would they do that?

Now we learn, from the bankruptcy papers the sister filed, that she received a $300,000 personal loan from a top Democratic Fundraiser and that she was a guest at Democratic events attended by Sen Whitehouse and in some reports, Sen. Kerry.

We also have learned that Jill Kelley had a close relationship with General Allen with whom she was exchanging thousands of emails.

I'm sorry but no ordinary person, especially one who was called 'unstable' by the judge in the custody, gets anywhere near all these people.

There is way, way more to all of this than we know or are ever likely to know. But if the Republicans, Cantor et al were trying to create a problem for Obama, they may not have expected the revelations that came from Jill Kelley's reporting the anonymous emails from Broadwell.

Is it possible that Broadwell suspected the 'Kardishians' were up to no good with Petraeus and that was the reason for her 'threats'? She was military herself and it is possible she was worried about security.

I don't feel bad to find all of this very puzzling since even news people have admitted that none of it seems to make much sense.

I do agree that Cantor et al may have been trying to cover for Petraeus, but then why bring the FBI into it? So even that doesn't make sense.

31. Keep in mind also...

Broadwell gives a "shout out" to Fox News at the end of her infamous question/answer session of the speech where she discloses (supposedly) classified information about Benghazi. She's also been photographed with Karl Rove.

http://crooksandliars.com/karoli/petraeus-rove-and-paula-broadwell-i-smell-r

The Fox News story referenced there is the story that spawned the "Obama lied; people died" meme they tried to smear President Obama with during the election. Their report claimed that despite requests by the CIA for backup, they were denied. That sent Fox News talkers into a tizzy about how terrible this administration was and how the blood of our diplomats was on their head.

Who else pimped that story all over Fox News, do you think? None other than Karl Rove
.

21. It was a coup against neo-con Petraeus

Diane Feinstein wasn't told so that she couldn't attempt to stop the coup.

Cantor might have, but apparently they decided that Petraeus was too far compromised by that time, so the neo-cons cut their losses and left him hanging out to dry.

Petraeus knew of the investigation from the FBI months ago, and therefore his backers must have known as well, unless he was gaming them. The latter alternative would also explain why Cantor didn't attempt to rescue Petraeus.

27. It is not the FBI's place to inform Congress.

The FBI's chain of command stops with the President and does not include Congress. It is the President who is responsible for informing Congress, and Obama couldn't do that them because he was not aware of the investigation.
