$200 iPad was just a "gussied up" mirror

Woman who bought iPad for $200 from Texas swindler finds out she was conned into buying a mirror

Jalonta Freeman paid $200 for the phony tablet in gas station parking lot, falling prey to a scheme that experts say tends to pick up around the holidays.

It all started when a stranger approached the women in the parking lot of an Arlington gas station, offering iPads and laptops at steep discounts. He told Freeman he would be willing to sell her an $800 iPad at a fourth the retail price.

Thinking the offer was too good to pass up especially with the holidays right around the corner Freeman handed over the cash and the guy drove off.

4. A few years ago it was flat screen boxes with oven doors in them.

Moral of the story: don't buy electronics from strangers in parking lots.

edit: That's a Best Buy display tag on the front. She thought she was getting a stolen store display. Now she's pissed because she didn't get the stolen goods she paid for?

6. And believing it was the gun-u-ine article...

being sold for 1/4 the price... by a stranger in a parking lot, it never occurred to her that more than likely, it was stolen.

Serves her right.

8. I can't muster any sympathy for her.

I mean for me, there's a difference between getting scammed, and just being an idiot.

10. Several times I've been approached by people in parking lots selling any number of things from

movies to electronics, I just keep walking ... fast. Not only do I figure it's a con but as woman having some guy approach me like that creeps me out.

11. You can rarely scam an honest person

That is generally true. Most cons are typically started as "I'm down on my luck so I have to sell this valuable thing for a fraction of it's value." or some variant of that.

The usual reason people get taken in by shysters is not misplaced empathy. It's greed.

13. Yep...

It's similar to the money found in a parking lot scheme. The right thing to do is turn it in, but greed feeds into the scam and people fall for it.

17. There is that con where someone pretends to be a grandkid in trouble

Wire me money and please don't tell Mom or Dad. That's cruel because it's likely to work on the loneliest people who never see or hear from their grandchildren very much to know..."No. Scott's frying eggs in the kitchen not backpacking in Europe. Who the hell are you?"

12. As they often say...

The reason a con works is the greed of the victim, and this extends of course to thinking that they
are getting away with stolen goods.

16. Oddly for $200 there are many android tablets that are very similar to an IPAD

if not better from various POV like more being more open but if all you care about is a brand name Apple is a good choice for many.
