To all the 18 to 35 YO, to women, to all the minorities I have a word for you

THANKS.

I'm a union guy. We worked hard here in Mass. for Warren and in NH for Obama. I don't get much trouble from people at work, after all I'm the union president (only 150 members, though) and they mostly agree with me on politics (or pretend they do).

However, everywhere else I go, outside of my union work, I have to argue all the time about politics. You see, I'm a 60 year old white guy and my contemporaries generally hate Barack Obama. I will never let a comment slide. There's no Kenya or birther or Muslim talk without me making a fool out of the individual, and I don't care if he's with his wife and kids. Anywhere, anytime, they'll hear the working class speech from me, with facts to back it up. I always felt outnumbered and besieged.

Well, because of the rest of the demographics that are not white, middle aged men, I get to gloat for at least 4 more years.

Here's my new line to my Friends who are in shock about the election (I had some of them predicting that Romney would win Mass., they just missed that prediction by 24 points). Well, anyway, here's the line. "Hey, Gary, do you know who the next Republican President is going to be?" Gary's response, "No, Louis, I don't know". My response, "I don't know either, because he hasn't been born yet."

I owe it all to you.

THANKS AGAIN.

louis c

by the way, I don't give ground. I'll rub their faces in it for the next 4 years. And for 8 more after Hillary wins twice.

3. Love it! (31 YO woman here)

You're welcome, although we all did this together! I poll watched and sign-waved. I am getting into arguments with anyone with the gall to try and comment about Obama or us liberals. The sore losers are really in quite a huff right about now. It may pass or subside, but we have 4 more years until we get out the vote for the next 'round of dems! Well, at least until the mid-terms, I guess...

Your post made me smile so big and I'm finding out just how many of us there are. I don't feel so alone in the wilderness that is deep red Florida this week.

5. JFTR -

I am a white female over 60. I stood outside working at the polls in the rain, sun and cold weather on behalf of the Democratic party. Every other person that I met working my early voting polling area was over 60 and white, some male but mostly female. You may want to re-think your assumptions.

9. I'm just quoting the polls

and I see it in my Friends. I'm sure there are a lot of us. But remember, numbers don't lie and Romney received a huge percentage of aging white males. Hell, he got 60% of the overall white vote. Add in the gender and age gaps, and you can see what I mean. Figures don't lie.

I'm not saying every white male hates President Obama. There's a third who think like me, and we are out working the polls and trying to convince others. But in a sea in which a majority agree with me, I'm on the desert island that holds the bitter, losing group that disagrees with me.

11. Women went for Obama 56%.

That is older women, younger women, all colors. Please don't help the right wingers with their attempt to cause friction or separation between generations of females. It pisses me off to see it on DU.

21. I Thank the Poster....

However here in Mass. We kicked RMONEY's BUTT back to whatever home he is using this week!
As a 60 year old white female along with my female friends 40 to 60 yrs.....and lets not forget my mom and her friends 86 +! We all voted for Obama and Warren!
We voted!
I cannot believe that the GOP would ever have thought that Romney could ever have had a chance in MA!
He was the worst Governor EVER!
When we had a disaster here....severe flooding in western MA. He was AWOL!
Anyone surprised...NOT!

22. I think you misunderstand me

I know full well that women of all ages and races supported Obama. That's my point. If Romney got 60% of white votes, yet lost sub-groups of whites, like women and young people, that increases the percentage of white, middle aged men inside that 60% who voted for Romney.

That proves my point of how isolated the white, middle aged male is in the overall demographic, where I find myself. Hence, my analogy of being isolated on a desert island in the sea that's the majority vote.

Also, in my original post, I did not differentiate women by sub-groups of race and age. I said women, without differentiation.

I hope that's clear enough so you didn't get the mistaken impression that I don't get the real numbers.

7. No...THANK *YOU*

I'm not in a Union, but my parents were both public school teachers.

I remember as a little kid being on the picket line with them when the East Baton Rouge Parish teachers went on strike. I don't even know if they got what they wanted, but I learned what a Union was.

Sorry to see the open war on y'all waged by the GOP. Hope this election begins to calm all that anti-Union noise.

Keep up the good fight.

18. Thanks to you older white folks (especially union guys) as well

The President got 38-39% among whites 39 and older. That's about the same as he got among whites overall. The fact of the matter is that Romney was counting on more of you guys voting his way.

It's hilarious that you hear the GOP over the past few days talking about how they need to start changing their message to sell their ideas to younger people and minorities. Maybe they should first examine the fact that they can't even sell their bullshit to almost 40% of the middle aged and older white folks to whom their message is already tailored.

The simple fact is that GOP social and economic policies have never and will never hold together a majority coalition. A strong plurality, sure, but never a majority. The only way they get a majority is when they have another issue they can use to play on peoples' fears, generally crime and/or national security. They had neither of those this time and thus they lost.
