America’s First Ever Hindu Congresswoman Will Take the Oath of Office Over the Bhagavad Gita
Last night, Hawaii not only elected Japan-born Mazie Hirono to be the first ever Asian-American woman elected to the Senate, they also elected Democrat Tulsi Gabbard as the first ever practicing Hindu to the US House of Representatives. Hawaii has been declared a Fox News Disaster Zone.
Thirty-one-year-old Gabbard is the daughter of two conservative Hawaii politicians and first ran for office at age 21. After her first term, she voluntarily served on a 12-month tour of duty with Hawaii's National Guard, and then became the first woman in the history of the Accelerated Officer Candidate School at the Alabama Military Academy to be designated a "distinguished honor graduate." When she's sworn in this January, she'll take her oath of office over a Bhagavad Gita, a sacred text for followers of the Vaishnava branch of Hindu. According to HuffPo, Gabbard's favorite verses include, — "That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul." (2:17) — "The soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon, nor can he be burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind."(2.23) http://jezebel.com/5958635/americas-first-ever-hindu-congresswoman-will-take-the-oath-of-office-over-the-bhagavad-gita?post=54075072

4. She's a Dem, she's green, seems pretty liberal and her parents were conservatives
|
I didn't find any statements on LGBT issues from her in a quick Google search but am guessing she's one of the good guys.

9. This article made me reconsider my opinion of Tulsi...
|
http://www.civilbeat.com/articles/2012/01/17/14558-tulsi-gabbards-leftward-journey/
I had the opportunity to listen and speak with her at several meet and greets here on Maui, and her transformation and growth into the person she is now seems sincere... she got my vote and support, and I am hoping for great things from her. BTW.., Rachel Maddow had a nice highlight of Tulsi on her show today, saying "she is on the fast track to being very famous someday..." nice..!! |

14. Tulsi's youth and her capacity to grow as a person makes her an appealing

potential democratic Vice Presidential or Presidential candidate down the road. Her parents were conservative politicians, but true to form, she is moderate-progressive, trending more progressive. I have listened to her speak and donated to her campaign, she seems to be a quiet, extraordinarily intelligent, sincere person.

20. I saw her speak and I concur with you and with Rachel Maddow

I once made a similar call after hearing a speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention. I didn't expect him to rise so fast, but he's doing okay so when it is time, this woman will be President. I don't know if she will be the first woman President, but she will be President some day.

...had a copy of the Bhagavad Gita in his library for her to use.
My daughter got to vote for Keith Ellison this time, here in Minnesota. (I'm still stuck out in the 3rd) I just loved the exploding Republican heads back when Ellison used Jefferson's copy of the Koran to take his first oath of office in the House. |

10. Isn't Hirono a Buddhist?
|
So we now have a Buddhist and a Hindu. Wow! They are definitely looking to take over the world. Before we know it, we'll be forced to swear allegiance to Buddha (or Vishnu, if the Hindu gods take over), practice yoga and whisper, "Namaste," to one another....America will never be the same.
