Ballots still being counted in Miami-Dade

With the presidential race settled but Florida still too close to call, Miami-Dade was still waiting Wednesday afternoon for final results.

On Wednesday afternoon, elections workers continued feeding thousands of pages of ballots into scanning machines — and they were not expected to finish until the evening, leaving a much-mocked blank spot on the long decided electoral map.

Earlier in the day, the county said 20,000 absentee ballots still needed to be counted. The office of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez issued a news release insisting that the “unprecedented length of the ballot” represents “over 100,000 pages that need to be reviewed and verified, one by one.”

“This in no way is representative of any issues or delays, but a matter of unprecedented volume,” the release said, noting that the county’s canvassing board is continuing to examine suspect absentee ballots.

11. I care!

Born and raised in Florida. Lived here all my life except for the 5 years my religious nutjob mother moved us to Texas and North Carolina because god told her to.

Tuesday morning my 18 year old son went with me to the school to vote for his first time. My 22 year old stood in line for over an hour in Volusia County to cast his vote. I'm a proud mom! This morning I was awakened to the kids in my neighborhood chanting Obama! Obama! outside. I wanted to run outside and shout with them but I didn't think they would appreciate a 47 year old in her nightgown interrupting their fun.

I hate what has happened to my state. But I am damn proud of the Democrats who stood in line for hours to cast their vote for our President.

What I don't get is who the hell voted for Prick Scott? I certainly have not met a single person who will admit to voting for Lord Voldemort. I do know one thing....this crap he has pulled with early voting in the state has sealed the deal of any notion of him being re-elected. It won't happen! I will do everything in my power to get him out of office.

So yeah, I give a fuck about Florida...this is my home.

13. Thank you for the welcome!

I didn't want to scare the poor kids, it was a happy time for them.

BTW - my county went red sadly (though not really surprised) but we did get rid of our repug sheriff and kept our "D" Supervisor of Elections. That made me VERY happy!

Today was a very good day here!

3. Florida's election system has been dysfunctional for more than 12 years

And they're only making it worse. And apparently that's OK with the majority of Floridians as they aren't fixing it.

9. Floriduh has been a joke going back at least through the 1920's and probably before that as well.

We just didn't have films to keep the joke that is that state alive before then.

5. Thank GOD it doesn't matter this time! Can you imagine if that outcome determined the President?

What a nightmare of waiting. It seems like we're going to win Florida anyway, but it would have been a messy way to win.

10. As others I've talked to today have said: If many much larger counties, cities, and whole states

can count their votes fairly quickly, why can't Miami-Dade?
