I worked the doors in Philadelphia and we were told that morning that polls were showing PA would be a tight race. Of course maybe they were telling us that to justify taking us to one of the worst neighborhoods in Philly. However we all had a great time knocking on doors and everyone we greeted was excited to vote for Obama. That evening as we handed out voting reminders to the shoppers at a local grocery store, everyone who passed us had 'I voted' stickers on them.
Anyhow after PA was called it was about 158 to 143 with Romney ahead. I was chatting with a first time voter and I explained to her how it was done - Obama was going to win.
See by that time all the big states that were sure wins for Romney were called which was mainly the southeast and Texas. The only other sure states left were small states in the midwest that might give Romney 3EV here and 5EV there. Nothing really signficant. Yet I knew that at 143 votes we still had 78 sure win electoral votes just waiting for their polls to be closed which was California(55), Oregon (9), Washington (12) and Hawaii (4). That was 78 votes to be added to Obama's already 43 votes meaning Obama just had to find 49 more votes to win whereas Romney probably still needed to find another 100 votes to win (he probably had about 20 more EV left in states not called).
Knowing that we had the West Coast covering our backs made the waiting for those swing states alot easier!!

(29,193 posts)until after I voted at 6:30pm... I tried to ignore all media coverage and even told friends who were wanting to talk about election results to "wait until tomorrow".
Because I am very busy these days... I did not want even the possibility of an Obama landslide to dissuade me from voting here in California.

I remember canvassing for Obama in Camden, NJ for the NJ primary back in 2008. Stepping on crack vials and the such. But, by God, those were the people who most needed to be brought into the political fold and I was honored to try and help.
