Goodbye, Mr. Rove.

There are a lot of things I love about how this election went down. But there's one particular piece of it that's close to my heart. This is the end of the end for the last of the Mayberry Machiavellis. Romney lost, and of course that's most important. But Karl Rove lost too. And it was a big, crazy, humiliating, awkward, career-ending and damnatio-memoria inducing loss.

Mr. Rove, I have been keeping your political eulogy on ice for years now, waiting for the moment when I coudl finally and definitively say: you are done. And glory hallelujiah, the moment has arrived.

I say the end of the end because Rove has been on a downward slide for years now. His particular brand of evil magic was at its most potent in 2004, when the post-9/11 shock that swept the American media left them peculiarly receptive to his siren song. The 2004 election, as many of us will remember, was "lost" in Ohio, though "lost" under circumstances suspicious enough that it took Kerry and Edwards a while to decide whether or not to concede it. Then, as now, the state government of Ohio was controlled by Republican operatives with close ties to Rove and friends, and then as now it was widely rumored that Rove had arranged with some of his buddies to steal it--one way or another--for George W. If you were not around here, or not interested in presidential politics, in 2004, you can find my account of what it was like watching this disaster unfold here. Briefly, here's what happened, according to the BBC:

Early exit polls quoted by media seemed to give Mr Kerry the edge, but colleagues said Mr Rove indicated right away that they did not tally with his information.

He used his own data to put Ohio and Florida in the Bush column - bringing cheers from the president and his family when he went into the Roosevelt Room and told them.

And when the TV networks gave either Ohio or Nevada to Mr Bush but not both - which would have led him to be declared as the winner - Mr Rove was one of the president's aides who got on the phone to news chiefs to try to pressure them to change their minds.

"He used his own data." That tells the sad, enraging, corrupt and gut-wrenching story of 2004 in a nutshell. It's painful looking back on that.

But you know what? I LOVE knowing that in 2012, he sat there on FOX News and tried to pull the same stunt...and nobody listened to him. Not even the delusional bastards at FOX News. Instead, they basically laughed at him...or thought, as one of their newscasters said as they cut back to McCormick Place, "AWKWARD!"

I guess Rove never made it back into the reality-based community after 2004. He was evidently unable to accept the idea that citing his secret Ohio data would not be enough to swing this one. And do you know why, Karl? Because after eight years of Bush and four years of Obama there were just not enough people left in America who were dumb enough to sign up for four years of Romney. No, not even in Ohio. No, not even after voter suppression and whatever other shenanigans your pals organized out there.

Because after Katrina and Sandy and Iraq and Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo and Mission Accomplished the media are finally awakening from their stupor. Corporate owned still, yes, of course. Blind to many long-term disasters in the making, sure. But they have witnessed some of the results of your boy's governing, Karl, and these W-made disasters--Katrina especially--appear to have reminded many of the individuals responsible for producing the news that they were still human and still had hearts and brains.

Because, after four years of a president who has something to offer besides humiliation, greed, and contempt, Karl, the American people no longer love the way you lie.

Because the number of bigoted white men willing to believe any bullshit as long as it makes them feel like they're king of the world is no longer a large enough percentage of the population to swing an election. Or even to swing Ohio.

It's true that I have in the past prononuced Karl Rove's demise somewhat prematurely. He may be back. But he can never be recalled to political life. If he ever returns it can only be as a zombie, as the leader of the walking undead who were buried under this landslide.

So goodbye, Karl. I wouldn't say it's been fun, though it's true you inspired some of my favorite journals. You even inspired my first and thank God so far only rap. But though you generated excellent material, I have always hated what you did to the American public sphere. I have always hated the way you exploited and fomented the absolute worst aspects of human nature. I have always hated the way you used your powers, Karl, and though there is much to celebrate today, I thought I would take some time to point out how much I love what we all got to see last night: That now and henceforth, Karl, you have no power at all.

Adieu,

The Plaid Adder

Politically it was wasted, but economically $1B across swing states can only help stimulate their economies, boost job growth and renew hope.

So really, Rove was working on our side. Thanks Karl. We don't love you, but we thank you for the $$$.

so it was just another way for Rmoney to cash in. I am sure that Rmoney did not spend one dime of his own fortune. He is going to come out of this just fine.

48. Really, when you stop to think it through...

... for someone in Romney's position running for president is a very effective wealth-transfer mechanism. I wonder what his net worth was before he got serious, versus what it is today?

I also wonder if paying yourself with internationally-'earned' money by buying ads on one of your own domestic radio stations could be a big money laundering/tax fraud scheme. I wonder if anyone is looking into that...

I never thought I'd see the likes of Snotnunu and Distort DaNewsa reappear after a decade of moldering in the ground... Yet they did stumble back on the scene. And so Rove may be down, but will make a comeback at some point down the road, with the promise of some sort of magical "tweak" to his failed strategies that some sucker will buy.

20. God and Jesus Reelect President Obama – here’s why:

The American people chose to re-elect President Obama despite the “conservative” right’s strenuous attempts to obfuscate the truth funded mainly by plutocratic “dark money”. We believe that the following facts drove the favorable outcome.

Americans believe in and want the separation of church and state. As long as you are not hurting other people or interfering with their civil liberties, you should be allowed to practice whatever crazy, nutbag religious beliefs you have (Evangelical Christians and Mormons come to mind here). However, those crazy, nutbag institutions are not to dictate the actions of government. Those of you in the South may be surprised to learn that this is written in the first amendment of a document called the “United States Constitution” and it reads, in part, as follows, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ...."

Americans want to maintain Social Security despite what “little brat” Paul Ryan may espouse. The average person simply does not save for retirement. Who knows why, maybe it is human nature, but it is a fact. Prior to the establishment of Social Security in the 1930’s, the average American died within two years of retirement. Since Social Security, this range has extended to over seven years. Not much has changed since the 1930’s when you consider the fact that the average Baby Boomer retiring today has saved less than $25K for retirement (in total). George W. Bush’s attempts to privatize Social Security resulted in a spectacular failure (one of a long list). This is why you often hear Tea Party members scream, “keep your government hands off our Social Security”. Airtight logic like that is what wins elections – for the opposition.

Democratic administrations have demonstrated that they can reduce the debt much better than Republicans can. See note 1 below.

Something had to be done about the unsustainable health care system. Ignoring one-in-six uninsured Americans is not Christ-like, especially in the world’s wealthiest (and “exceptional”) nation. Although poorly sold, the Affordable Care Act (aka “Obamacare”), has very popular and pragmatic features that will reign in the out-of-control health insurance industry. It’s a good step towards “single payer” which is what small businesses and entrepreneurs (the real job creators) really want and need to grow the economy.

Americans do not want to return to 1950’s by relitigating settled social issues such as a woman’s right to choose, civil rights, contraception, etc. Most of the Republican primary topics came across as foolish gibberish 100% counter to the wishes of average Americans. For example, most know that access to free contraception reduces the abortion rate. Which do the “conservatives” want?

Americans want real candidates to run for the nation’s highest office, not the clown show of Republican fools that were trotted out this year: Santorum, Bachman, Perry, Cain. Did we mention Santorum?

As an aside, voters in America’s economic centers are sick of a handful of overrepresented, yet unproductive “red” states obstructing progressive policy for the rest of the country. It is a perverse fact, but contrary to popular belief, those who make the most noise complaining about Federal spending are the same people who receive the most Federal dollars. See note 2 below.

Here’s to four more years!

Note 1)

Ronald Reagan:
Took office January 1981. Total debt: $848 billion
Left office January 1989. Total debt: $2,698 billion
Net change in debt: $1,850 billion

George H.W. Bush:
Took office January 1989. Total debt: $2,698 billion
Left office 20 January 1993. Total debt: $4,188 billion
Net change in debt: $1,490

Bill Clinton:
Took office 20 January 1993. Total debt: $4,188 billion
Left office 20 January 2001. Total debt: $5,728 billion
Net change in debt: $1,548

George W. Bush:
Took office 20 January 2001. Total debt: $5,728 billion
Left office 20 January 2009. Total debt: $10,627 billion
Net change in debt: $4,899

Barack Obama:
Took office 20 January 2009. Total debt: $10,627 billion
Total debt (as of the end of April 2011): $14,288 billion
Net change in debt: $3,661

Note: The Obama spending was mostly due to ongoing Bush era programs (such as the Iraq war of choice, devastating tax cuts, the unfunded Medicare part D and the TARP) and a devastated economy due to Republican deregulation of the financial services industry starting with the Phil Gramm Glass Steagall repeal.

Note 2)

States receiving the most federal funding per tax dollar paid:

1. West Virginia: $2.57
2. Mississippi: $2.47
3.
4.
5. Alabama: $2.03
6. Alaska: $1.93
7. Montana: $1.92
8. South Carolina: $1.92

73. wow! what an impressive first post!

I had no idea that in the 30s most people died so soon after retirement... that's incredible. How amazing that the program continues to work with such different life expectancies now.

And to what you said about the separation of church and state, social issues, health care, and red-state obstructionism.... I'm looking forward to reading more from you!

was truly a stunt to behold. I'd not discount him now, tho, as power is never easily relinquished, especially wherever the mighty profits of capitalism are involved. But I appreciate your excellent essay, in that you've shone one bright light on the mechanizations of just one of these weasels, once again.

I thank you for that.

Thank God we have come up with a plan to quash their election-stealing scheme: fight like hell! It's no longer a secret that the repukes use every dirty trick in the book to get their wholly incompetent candidate 'elected,' but we've shown that by fighting back, we reclaimed our constitutional right as Americans to have our votes counted. And I know that next time around, we will again prevail.

the other thing that put an end to rove was the simple ability of the Democratic Party and the Obama campaign team to full exploit the electronic online medium. rove is still living in the world where he thinkgs he can bully and connive his way to winning, but that kind of backroom tactics can no longer stand in an age where the speed and power of texting, tweeting, etc far out pace anything little rove could ever hope to conjure up from his boiling stew of black magic politics.

63. I've been similarly inspired by

another evil figure, Karen Ignagni, who lobbies Congress and bullies presidential administrations on behalf of AHIP, or America's Health Insurance Plans.
She represents the health insurance industry, the most obvious exponent of the medicine for profit as idea and practice.
When Bill Clinton was close to giving us national health insurance in 1992-3, Karen and her friends put together those Harry and Louise ads.
When Barack Obama gave her a say, she demanded the inclusion of the individual mandate.
And if she didn't get it, she'd discredit the government in the same way as before.
And her looks make her a perfect Disney witch as in Sleeping Beauty-- horned cap, snaky walk, slim figure and all!
She comes from the same part of the country as Tim McVeigh, but has much, much more blood on her hands.

or to Don Siegelman, or the US Attorneys who even though they were Republicans, refused to indict innocent Democrats on Rove's orders. Or that he has never been held accountable for all the crimes he committed against this country.

I was thrilled to see his complete Melt Down on Fox, and the irony that it was Fox who had to try to save him from embarrassment, his favorite tool for all these years.

But I still want to see him brought to justice. If for no other reason than to make a statement that this country will not tolerate his brand of 'politics' anymore.

But guys like him don't go down without a fight. So better believe he will be tag-teaming with congressional Repubs the next 4 years.

What's mind boggling is that so many Repubs and Freepers claim that our side is full of Chicago-style mob tactics and members... many of them think the Dems stole the election. Where are they getting that? I know their Fox watchers and all, but damn... I didn't know that Fox was pumping such heinous ideas into their heads... That's what I get I guess for not watching the network.

91. In 2008, I felt like I got revenge for the 2000 theft

And last night, I felt like I got it for 2004. And the weird thing is, last night felt more sweet. I remember going through the hell that was 2004 here on DU, a relative newbie at the time, and I remember how all of us got so excited when the exit polls were released, only to see our hope turn to bewilderment, disbelief, and finally despair and rage as the day wore on. That was seriously one of the darkest nights of my life, because it really looked like our country was on a permanent road to a fascist theocracy.

Last night, I imagine quite a few righties got to know the pain many of us felt in 2004. It almost makes me pity them a little. And I stress the word ALMOST.

Great OP. And I agree, Karl Rove will probably rear his porkish head here and there from time to time in the future, but for the most part he's done. He will never be perceived as the golden whiz kid that knows every trick in the book. His tricks have been exposed, and firmly rejected by America. He's more of a hindrance to the GOP at this point, because he will always have the ball and chain known as Dubya shackled to his ankle.

99. We can celebrate this victory. We are still in for a long fight.

The people Karl Rove supported may have gone down to defeat, but the country is still divided.

We still have Citizen's United.

Billionaires will want to find ways to spend their money to influence politics and buy politicians.

Billionaires will still find a use for Karl Rove. He may stay behind the curtain this time.
He may avoid the limelight. He will be there, in the shadows, pulling strings.

My sister and I must be quiet about our political views living so close to the North Dakota border.

I told someone I was a staunch Democrat and she told me to get out of her house and never come back.
This person is a Bible waving, yell at the top of her lungs if you disagree with her, very "religious", gay hating, abortion hating, contraception hating individual.

My sister couldn't go to Church the last three Sundays because the Church was preaching politics from the pulpit. If you didn't vote Republican and didn't support the proposition that marriage is only between one man and one woman, you were the spawn of the Devil. If you didn't agree with them, you would be viewed with contempt and hatred. I told her not to go to Church for the next few weeks until the Bible thumping at the Church dies down and they start to worry about following the Parable of the Good Samaritan again.

Little do they understand contempt begets contempt, hatred begets hatred.

We win the fight, the long war, when we change the minds of everyone who has been brainwashed.

We win the war when Fox News ceases to be the only news outlet these people listen to or watch.

We win the war when these people stop listening to Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck.

It's far too early to celebrate. Rich people do not go away when they fail.
Rich people find another way to get their way. I shudder to think what that way will be.
