Ohio Secretary Of State Acknowledges Loss Of Thousands Of Voter Registration Records

With the presidential election happening in just four days, the battleground state of Ohio is once again a major piece of the election puzzle. Already a hotbed for controversial moves and measures concerning the voting rights of its citizens, the “Buckeye State” finds itself on the map again after Republican Secretary of State, Jon Husted, acknowledged that a data glitch could have an effect on thousands of voters ahead of November 6, wrote the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

33,000 updated registration records were felled by a glitch triggered by “change-of-address” records and were resent by Husted’s office to local election officials. Voter rights advocates contend that thousands of absentee-ballot requests may have been incorrectly rejected in Ohio due to the software snafu between the secretary of state offices and the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The Columbus Dispatch reports that county election boards did not have current addresses for a number of registrants.

Initially, up to 100,000 notifications of changed addresses from the bureau’s website did not make their way to the secretary of state’s offices. In just a year’s time, motor vehicles have been sharing its records with Husted’s offices in order to keep a correct tally of registered voters. The glitch was immediately discovered, with the majority of the group able to be processed. The remaining 33,000 records are said to be undergoing process, and the state’s election board promises that there will be enough time to power through the erroneous data.

In related news, a recent ruling in Ohio is especially troubling; this after United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit judges stayed an order that may disenfranchise voters who were directed incorrectly by poll workers to vote in the wrong precincts this disallowing their ballots to be counted. The Bush-appointed panel of conservative judges ruled that it was the voters’ responsibility to know the correct precinct and puts too much of an onus on poll workers. An appeal must be legally heard but it is possible that with less than a week before Election Day, nothing will be done.

It shows that the governor and his administration condone what's happened.

I've seen public officials step down over lesser things than this.

A clean election free of even a whiff of corruption should be the basic benchmark to judge the SOS. This is the third straight presidential election in which Ohio was one of the states in which there were questions on whether the vote counting was conducted properly. And it's been under the Republicans' watch every time.

Husted must resign!

Don't know Ohio rules, but Virginia requires that a voter who says s/he is registered MUST be provided a Provisional Ballot.

Assuming poll workers and watchers in OH are prepared to deal with this. Of course means delay, but that's been a 'given' in Ohio for some time.

and my guess is that there will be tons of provisional ballots in Virginia this year, since the new voting law requires ID in order to vote. Lots of IDs are accepted, but if you don't have one with you, then you must vote a provisional ballot. Once that happens, the burden is on the voter to provide ID by the Friday following the election.

The Secretary of Suppression Jon Husted is doing everything he can to stop voting here in Ohio. First he tried to end early voting even though we been doing it since 2006....he doesn't want to "confuse" voters. He fired two democratic board directors cause they didn't approve his plan to allow republican counties to extend their voting hours but lower the hours of democratic counties. The courts ruled against him. Then came that joke of a attempt to stop early voters by claiming that only military people should be allowed to vote three days before election. Seems to be a direct violation of the equal protection clause of the constitution, but Jon pushed it anyways and again lost in the courts. Now just recently he mailed new registration forms late....forcing the boards to scramble to get all voters on the poll and he just ordered a "new software patch" to be installed on several voting machines. Ohhh and Tagg Romney just happens to be a minority owner in the voting machine company.

I believe that my fellow ohioan's need to called for the resignation or impeachment of Jon Husted!

Unfortunately, a crime has to be committed before a perp can be brought to justice. Since our national security apparatus now appears to have the ability to screen vast amounts of phone calls and emails, one would think that a massive set of court cases could result from evidence that they've already accumulated, not to mention the info storm from what's about to happen.

Those who watch us as they watch over us look anywhere there's interest. Interfering with a presidential election is undoubtedly of interest. And the many intelligence organs of our government have marvelous powers to look, these days. And to remember.

This Ohio Secretary of State seems blind to his visibility.

If a crime occurs, they will know where to look.
