http://news.yahoo.com/stop-hurricane-nuking-134559194.htmlThe article explains the obvious reasons why it wouldn't work, but that there are people out there who think it's even a plausible option blows my mind.
In other news, I have a zit on my forehead. I think I'll use a shotgun to get rid of it.

(10,857 posts)... every problem looks like a nail.
As I was trying to explain to my better half last night, had that nuclear plant in Jersey been active and had melted down, the circular motion of the storm might have dispersed the radiation among a hundred thousand square miles and 100 million people.
I think nuking a hurricane would achieve a similar--but far worse--result.

It's up to the rest of us to keep them away from sharp or explosive objects.

It raged up into a hell-bent shit-roarer that frightened every one so badly that they forgot to mention what they had done. Besides tropical systems are the only thing that keep us from becoming the Sahara in the South. We need the moisture. We hope and pray that we will not get a direct hit and always feel for the people who are impacted, but that's it. Don't mess with nature.

(40,416 posts)Nuking a hurricane sounds like something a Steve Buscemi Hollywood character would do.
Just as inane and stupid as nuking an asteroid on a collision course to Earth.
1. It doesn't solve the problem.
2. It most likely will make the problem much, much worse.
3. It is pretty much impossible to achieve anything near success with the proposed technique, even if it could conceivably work.
In other words, it's ham-handed and ignorant.
We have the technology to steer an asteroid away from Earth impact right now (given that we have sufficient time -- note that no nuclear weapons are required). But we have no technology for steering a hurricane.

Sure why not?
