When a TS turns in to a Hurricane, no matter what the level, I get the hell outta dodge! A few hours of driving is worth the hassle of staying safe.

(1,716 posts)I still hear people say that the folks at the Superdome deserved what happened to them because they should have evacuated. Well, they did evacuate, the Superdome was the shelter that they evacuated to. There was National Guard there and everything.
Blame the victim is a popular game.

(31,892 posts)and there were busses to take folks off Galveston if they were willing to go. I know it's not ideal and pets are sometimes an issue.
I also don't think we need to evacuate all the suburbs.
We are typical suburban in south Houston - no summer homes or time shares. We have a Marriott in a small town that we like between here and Dallas that takes dogs - and we head there. We are also in an evacuation zone. Folks in Katy should not be evacuating - that is why the roads were crowded during Rita. Folks who had no business evacuating were doing so.
You make a really good point though - folks don't realize it is costly for gas, food, hotels on the road and that will keep folks from going even when they are in the evacuation zone and should leave.

(683 posts)I made a PERSONAL statement - and yes I was part of the Rita evacuation, however I live on the coast where it is not safer to stay in your homes. My statement was to communicate what a weenie I am when it comes to storms and other natural disasters, and that I flee even when it's a teeny hurricane.
I read and re-read my post, and at NO point did I mention anyone else. IDK if it's the election or what, but people have to quit assuming every post is intended to blame or degrade someone else. If anything I was making fun of myself.

(31,892 posts)leave the roads free so those of us in the evacuation zones can get out. We are not saying Katy and Conroe should evacuate - in fact plenty of folks fill up the hotels in the Woodlands just to stay closer to work and get out of the way of the storm.
Think about it.

(31,892 posts)we are on the edge of an evacuation zone. Kids are young (dogs too) so we load up our cars and get the hell out for a week. There are hotels all over Texas ... with running water etc. It's bad enough when we go home to empty stores, gas stations, and a fridge to clean out. Sitting through no electricity all week is not worth it.
