Raining and windy as heck. Lights flickering but still have power.
Scared a tree is going to come down on the house. No danger of flooding at my house.
The cats and I are hunkered down and waiting. Very, very windy right now!
Watching local (Philly) news all day, it looks really bad at the Jersey shore.

(11,065 posts)Not much rain with this storm. The wind can seriously whoop though. My biggest issue is the dog wants to be out in it all the time. I don't get it, but he loves storms. I'm out of reasonably dry towels to dry him with he's been in and out so much (mostly with me trying to convince him that no, you really don't want to take a nap smack in the middle of the yard in a hurricane. So far he doesn't believe me. The kitchen has been flooded since this afternoon just from his shaking three gallons of water off himself each time I finally convince him to come back in the house. Just before dark he convinced me somehow to take him for a walk, but he was having too much fun to bother with pooping while we were out getting soaked (though he did pee on one Romney sign - good doggie!).
The lights have very recently flickered a few times but haven't lost any electricity yet. Then again this house is old and the lights will flicker for no reason at all sometimes. Basement is dry as a bone... these old houses have great well-built basements (you could probably blow off hand grenades down there and no one would hear it).
How does one know if they lost any electricity while they were asleep and for how long if they wake up and it's on again? My new alarm clock has a backup battery in it somewhere, so I don't get the blinking "12:00" thingie that was what I used to go by.
Going back to try to convince the dog once again to get his wet hairy ass back in the house (and no, drying off in my bed is out of bounds).

(11,065 posts)He's up here now telling me he wants his usual night time walk and we were just out a few hours ago! OMG, I better not give in again. I'm already having to start using bits of laundry from the laundry hamper to dry him with since all the towels are now soaked.
Ok, if I'm really quiet and don't move much maybe he'll forget about going outside... he's suddenly taken an interest in hunting and capturing his own feet, so hopefully that will take his mind off the outdoors for awhile.
I'm keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that we don't lose the electricity or at least not for long. That's my only real worry. If I lose that then I won't be able to use pretty much anything in the house (I have a gas range though which is nice for times like these). I just don't really know what to do with myself. I don't think I can do any sewing or reading just with candle light... too blind for that I think.

(1,663 posts)Electricity has gone out a few times for a minute and came back on immediately. The problem is we have a lot of really large trees here.
The worst so far is a large tree split and fell on a neighbor's car. He was lucky to get out unharmed. Why he was trying to leave his driveway is a mystery since there was a curfew.
Good luck to all.

(1,977 posts)The wind is gusting pretty strong and I've been watching the power cable connected to my building swaying like one of those cheesy dashboard hula dancer dolls. The cable runs through a tree and I'm hoping it doesn't take down the cable. I'm using my shiny new laptop to post this because if the power does go out I'll just lose the dsl modem and it won't screw up my desktop pc.

She and family are fine. Still no power, water or sewage... but nobody hurt and the house, relatively, intact. Sanitation services are running so the carpet they've been pulling out of the house is being picked up.

(3,469 posts)We're right on the bay with a body of water 50 yards in front of our condo, a pond behind our condo a creek about 100 yards to our right and a marina about 200 yards to our left. Plus, we live on an island. It's hitting pretty hard right now but we still have power and no flooding. I'm sure that parts of the island are flooded but we're okay over here so far. We stayed dry through Irene and Isabel so I'm feeling pretty good about this.
We are selling this condo and are supposed to go to settlement Wednesday. I'm freaking out about that because I don't know how we will get out of here with all the rain today and tomorrow. We rushed out Saturday and rented a van and moved everything we could to storage but we still have a bed, a potting shelf and some clothes and food and stuff we need to get out. It's so weird because last year when the earthquake hit a pipe broke in the condo above us and flooded us. We had forty-eight hours to move everything to storage and on the second day of moving we got a manditory evacuation order because of hurricane Irene. I'm having a weird mix of deja-vu and PTSD.
You have quite alot to deal with all at once! Luckily your closing date is in the middle of the week and not on a Friday so if you get delayed by a day, that is not TOO bad.
Hopefully everything will be okay and go as planned.
At least you sound like you will be safe, and that is the important thing!
It has been crazy but after the earthquake/broken pipe/hurricane/snake fiasco last year, this seems like nothing.

(3,370 posts)We are getting rocked by the winds. We are one of few neighborhoods with power. We got really lucky with the rain so far. This wind is insane and, frankly, I am scared shitless. I hate it. We have a bunch of trees next to our house on the side where the bedrooms are, so the family is camping out in the dining room and kitchen - away from windows.
Prayers to all in the path of this storm.

(11,175 posts)My power went off at around 10:59 p.m. and came back on a minute or so later.
My cell phone is fully charged and seems to be in good order, but I can't make calls or retrieve my messages. I assume that a necessary tower or relay station is out of commission.

(73,528 posts)The roads in my county are closed. It's wet out -- though not raining at the moment -- and there are gusts of wind. I'm sure that some trees will fall, and the electric could go. But I can't complain: there are millions on the East Coast who are having it far, far worse than me.
It has been curious outside -- at times, the moon lights up the sky, and I can see my shadow on the ground.

(7,185 posts)hubby from binghamton area originally; so much flooding there the last few years.
H2O Man
(73,528 posts)I've only got information from friends near Binghamton, and it is not bad ..... both 2006 and 2011 were hell. But it takes about 6 to 7 inches of rain for major flooding to begin.
I'll check the Binghamton newspaper's web site (and Oneonta's) ......

(28,581 posts)Lost power early in the storm, it was restored in a few hours. Next town over in Peabody, friends house retained power through out but did have a big tree come down. Driving on back roads is hazardous with many downed large trees..suggest driving slowly.
The wind was intense and I have to say that I felt quite off balance all day/evening, almost like that dazed feeling when you get a head cold or a sinus infection. I think it was the low pressure from the storm. I've been through a bunch of these and never had a feeling quite like this. It was, to say the least, unnerving. Anyone feel anything similar?
The malamute was very unhappy all evening, the cat could not have cared less.

(2,379 posts)We were without power, heat, water, or phone (had to drive 10 mins away to get a signal on cell) and without a generator for 9 days in the late Oct. snowstorm last year.

(4,507 posts)Never lost *internet* at any point, and comcast isn't exactly a bang-up operation.
Apartment leaked badly, but that's mostly about shoddy construction. Some possessions were destroyed that I couldn't get up off the floor soon enough.
No loss of power, no loss of internet, nothing. Heavy, lashing rain and intimidating wind, but downtown DC kind of got nothing but a really bad storm.
Thoughts are with those who were much more affected.

(205,133 posts)I'm pretty amazed, since we lost power during Irene last year. I was on the roads about an hour before what was supposed to be the worst of it and it was pretty windy, off and on rain blowing sideways, but not nearly as bad as we expected, gusts up to 65. We had massive closings, most of them by noon on Monday, and the Albany TV weather report went into overtime. My brother lost power in the afternoon, but it was back on by evening. I think we dodged a bullet and I'm just grateful.

(47,209 posts)But ridiculously well fed. Been ferrying less fortunate people- some who lost their entire apartments- around town and transporting food and firewood to people's belongings and pets to warmer environments and wifi hotspots.
