Sandy Damages Pier in Downtown Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP/WBOC)- Hurricane Sandy has done significant damage to a large fishing pier in the beach resort of Ocean City.

Town officials confirmed the damage, which occurred early Monday as heavy surf pounded at the pilings.

Gov. Martin O'Malley says the fishing pier is now "half-gone."

The pier extends from the southern end of the Boardwalk in an area that has been under a mandatory evacuation order.

Republicans, of course, continue to lie about global climate change -- even if the face of this Huge Disaster. I blame Republicans for making the whole situation worse by systematically lying about it.

I recall when staying in OCMD that the hotels have no first floor -- just for water to wash through.

Mother Nature is showing us the insignificance of our structures, eh.

We go through the back roads of Delaware and come in at Fenwick. Much more pleasant, less traffic. Always make time for a stop at a farm stand.

We were very sad this year (after a hiatus of a couple years) that the Happy Harry's chain is gone.

is usually OK. It's higher than Jamestown. Likely there will be flooding --Jamestown is a low marshy island. Yorktown is on a high bluff. There will be flooding on the Peninsula (as they call the strip between the James and the York) but the Norfolk area is usually much worse.

I know Chincoteague well. There are lots of houses and shops there. They are used to hurricanes but I'm not sure I've ever heard of the island being covered over with water. I'm afraid the east coasts barrier islands will not do well with climate change....

The wild ponies will hunker down in a sheltered spot. They swim y'know...
