The winds have increased. The storm is massive and the tidal surge could well be the worst thing about this storm. I know a lot of folks here have scoffed at the coverage, but this is not looking good for millions of people. Unless it suddenly veers sharply out to sea, the Northeast is in for a hell of time, not just today and tomorrow but for weeks to come.
Here's a live blog from ABC.

(153,150 posts)when people complained about forecasts he'd say, "YOU go up against Mother Nature - SEE HOW YOU DO!" And that is it - Mother Nature can be VERY UNPREDICTABLE and in case like Sandy, assuming the worst is the best course of action!

High tide will be effected by the full moon. The highest ever recorded surges in Bridgeport were 12 feet during the 1938 Hurricane. We have predictions of about 10 feet. Hope it doesn't break any records.
I live more in the northern part of CT but worried about those further down.

(14,040 posts)of how big and bad the storm surge is. This is the PETA headquarters in Norfolk, VA. They offer a dog park. The park is right along the river and the hurricane proper isn't hitting this area. Anyway, this is what the park usually looks like when a hurricane HITS the area.

I really hope the people in low lying areas are evacuating if they've been told to do so.

(32,053 posts)but after experiencing a few down here I urge everyone to take all precautions (and we don't even stay - we evacuate and come home to an area that usually has no power or is just getting it back, store shelves bare, gas stations empty etc ...) There are so many conveniences we take for granted in this country.
The thing that worries me is all the power outages with elderly folks, babies, homeless etc - I hope Red Cross is ready and I'll certainly be making a donation.

(31,706 posts)With MSNBC in prison all weekend (obviously the storm wasn't worth spending the time and a half or bothering staffers to come in on the weekend) and football and baseball all over the other channels, there wasn't much coverage of the storm on my teevee this weekend. Sorry...faux and CNN don't count as they don't come in on my teevee. I found a lot more information here, on Facebook and other websites...from people who are actually being affected...not from some studio talking head...
