A TURN TOWARD THE NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED TODAY...FOLLOWED BY A TURN TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST TONIGHT. ON THE FORECAST TRACK...THE CENTER OF SANDY WILL MOVE OVER THE COAST OF THE MID-ATLANTIC STATES THIS EVENING OR TONIGHT.

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 85 MPH...140 KM/H...WITH HIGHER GUSTS.

5. Sandy’s wind field has expanded ... now extends over 500 miles ... 65 dead

Hurricane Sandy’s big size presents huge problems
http://earthsky.org/earth/hurricane-sandys-big-size-presents-big-problems

The overall meteorological setup for Sandy is extremely rare. We are not just dealing with a large hurricane. We are dealing with a hurricane that is developing extratropical characteristics and becoming a mid-latitude cyclone. In most hurricanes, the strongest winds are located near the center (eyewall), but not in Sandy. Instead of storing all of the energy near the center of the storm, Sandy’s wind field has continuously expanded throughout the past 48 hours. Tropical storm force winds (39 miles per hour or higher) extend outwards over 500 miles! All of this energy is what truly alarms me. It means, for instance, that storm surge will be much greater. Also, we are talking about millions of people in the Mid-Atlantic and New England who will likely lose power and who will have strong winds in their vicinity for 24 to 48 hours.

... Hurricane Sandy is already responsible for killing 65 people in the Caribbean, with the largest death toll occurring in Haiti ....

Google Launches Interactive Hurricane Sandy Crisis Response Map
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2411491,00.asp

MAP: http://google.org/crisismap/2012-sandy

Google's Crisis Response team has constructed an interactive map designed to help make sense of the epic weather phenomenon.

Built upon a foundation of standard Google Maps data, the default presentation of the map offers a view of Hurricane Sandy's path, a precipitation radar overlay (with adjustable translucence), public alert zones, and Red Cross safety shelter locations represented by Google's well-known red location pins.

However, it's important to note that this isn't simply a map with static graphics and an array of clickable location pins displayed. The map's side bar features a very deep menu containing vital information for local residents and concerned observers. The sidebar controls feature traffic condition overlays, neighborhood flooding zone estimates, satellite-resolution cloud imagery, high wind probability graphics, area webcams offering a peek at real-time conditions (and associated YouTube videos), and a wealth of other information, all interactive and updated as the storm progresses.

The rich trove of aggregate data is augmented by information from the NOAA National Hurricane Center, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Weather.com, the National Weather Service, and the United States Geological Survey.

NASA's TRMM Satellite Analyzes Hurricane Sandy in 3-D
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hurricanes/archives/2012/h2012_Sandy.html

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, or TRMM satellite can measure rainfall rates and cloud heights in tropical cyclones, and was used to create an image to look into Hurricane Sandy on Oct. 28, 2012. Owen Kelly of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. created this image of Hurricane Sandy using TRMM data.

At 2:20 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Oct. 28, Hurricane Sandy was a marginal category 1 hurricane and its eyewall is modest, as TRMM reveals, which gives forecasters and scientists hints about its possible future strength.

The eyewall appeared somewhat compact with its 40 km (24.8 miles) diameter. The eyewall contained only relatively light precipitation, and none of Sandy's eyewall storm cells managed to burst through, or even reach, the tropopause which has about a 10 km (6.2 miles) height at mid-latitudes. Evidence of the weak updrafts in the eyewall comes from the fact that the TRMM radar's reflectivity stayed under 40 dBZ, a commonly cited signal strength at which updrafts can be vigorous enough to form hail and to lift smaller ice particles up through the tropopause and into the stratosphere.

NOAA's GOES-13 satellite (Oct. 26-28, 2012) shows Hurricane Sandy move out of the Bahamas and its western clouds spread over the U.S. eastern seaboard. The circulation is evident over the Atlantic Ocean as Sandy moved northward.

11. What an infuriating waste of government money!!
Mon Oct 29, 2012, 10:13 AM
Oct 2012

If the federal government would just quit this stupid weather forecasting business the free market would provide for all the satellite imagery and forecasts we could ever want, at a lower cost.

Right? Right??!?! LOL. Actually I'm pretty certain there was an effort in Congress some time back to prevent NASA and NOAA from providing this sort of data to the public for free so that some private companies that re-package it could charge more. Rick Santorum's name might be associated with this.

Question: how many "small government" right wingers exist in a hurricane disaster zone?

Update 17: Latest NOAA update, at 11:00AM EDT
Hurricane-force winds are expected from Chincoteague, Virginia to Chatham, Massachusetts.

AT 1100 AM EDT...1500 UTC...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE SANDY WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 37.5 NORTH...LONGITUDE 71.5 WEST. SANDY IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 18 MPH...30 KM/H. A TURN TOWARD THE NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED SOON...FOLLOWED BY A TURN TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST TONIGHT. ON THE FORECAST TRACK... THE CENTER OF SANDY IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL ALONG OR JUST SOUTH OF THE SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY COAST THIS EVENING OR TONIGHT.

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 90 MPH...150 KM/H...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SANDY IS EXPECTED TO TRANSITION INTO A FRONTAL OR WINTERTIME LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM PRIOR TO LANDFALL. HOWEVER...THIS TRANSITION WILL NOT BE ACCOMPANIED BY A WEAKENING OF THE SYSTEM...AND...IN FACT...A LITTLE STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE DURING THIS PROCESS. SANDY IS EXPECTED TO WEAKEN AFTER MOVING INLAND.

Update 16: This is getting kind of scary—Sandy is hitting so hard that could really flood the New York City's subway system. Learn about it here

Parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens are already flooding and the storm isn't over the city in full force yet. That will happen around 4pm today. Take a look at these images, taken just a few minutes ago:
