One really stupid reason some people support Romney - it makes them feel rich.

It's a lifestyle thing, kind of like living in a big McMansion or buying fancy jewelry & watches.... if you support Romney, it implies you have money and are successful. If you vote Obama, it must mean you're poor and need government help.

I don't know how we combat such idiocy, but it's very much a factor, especially out in the 'burbs.

just slightly above average or slightly below average - so they pretend they are actually part of the upper crust and it is just a matter of time before the world acknowledges their brilliance and superiority and they get the riches they think they deserve.

that the republicans problem is that they want to be the richest, and since they are not, they feel that they are losers; to hide that emotion they put on the pompous show that we see.

It is because he still retains the scent of working class roots on himself, and he knows the elites can smell it on him a mile away. So he assumes phony airs.

Both he and Ann are nouveau riche, social climbing individuals with no real social standing among the true elites they cluelessly attempt to emulate. They do not come from the families of the upper crust that have dominated the top with their old money. The Romneys would not have fit in Mrs. Astor's ballroom nor would they have been welcome at Mrs. Vanderbilt's lawn parties in Newport. Not even impoverished European counts or exiled princes would have cared to socialize with them. Romney is not one of them. He dirties his hands with money. And he does nothing interesting with his wealth. Where are the art museums? The cultural legacies of his enormous fortune? He seems a bit of a skinflint actually. A car elevator does not count. And his wife tries way too hard to be accepted. Too bad that when she wears a designer dress, the designer is forced to retire the design as it will be viewed as frumpy thanks to her endorsement.

The smarmy ruthless grandson of a polygamist, and the graceless daughter of a coalminer. Seriously, these two still betray their class roots to those who truly see themselves as the elite. New money. Decked out like dressage horses. Even Barbara Bush would look down her nose at them.

It is the one consolation. The man is a Wall Street mobster, and no matter how much money he spends, he will never be remotely respectable. Even to the 1% he champions. And he knows it. That's the best part.
