Wisconsin Mass Shooter Exploited Background Check Loophole That NRA Says Isn't A Problem

The National Rifle Association's media arm, NRA News, recently downplayed the public safety threat posed by a loophole in federal law that allows domestic abusers and other prohibited persons to purchase firearms without undergoing a background check. But the alleged perpetrator in an October 21 shooting at a Brookfield, Wisconsin spa that left three dead and four wounded reportedly abused that same loophole to obtain his firearm.

Today the Associated Press reported that Radcliffe Haughton purchased a handgun without a background check from a private seller, and obtained the weapon two days after becoming subject to a restraining order that required him to turn any firearms he owned into police.

On August 29, Cam Edwards, the host of Cam & Company on NRA News, obfuscated the loophole during a segment in which he expressed opposition to a proposal by Mayors Against Illegal Guns to require background checks on nearly all gun sales.

Of course there is no problem... I was wondering, now we know.

to this story and not one of them seem to get the point that people were killed and people are concerned that more innocent people will be killed but just maybe we could prevent some of them. All the gunners care about is their ability to posses guns.

Still, I was wondering if that loophole had something to do with it. YUP

I posted the following in another thread earlier today:

the antics of the NRA are preventing any legislation from being publicly debated with thoughtful consideration and that is harmful to us all, gun owners and not.

At some point the right wing in this country will lose control of government. When that happens, backlash from the NRA's extremism will result in firearm bans that go well beyond the common good. This will be, to a large degree, the fault of the NRA.

It and the temple shooting have shaken our community to the core. Terribly terribly sad.

The one thing I've heard no one but my friends discuss is this: These last 2 mass shootings in WI were both committed by veterans. Maybe we're not taking proper care of our veterans after they come home from war. I'm sure war isn't good for one's mental health. I believe people are inherently good, so I refuse to give up on the external factors that facilitate this violence, i.e. easy access to guns for the mentally ill, availability of high-powered assault weapons, WAR, lack of support for our veterans, lack of support for the mentally ill... and no Mr. Romney, I don't think single mothers are one of these factors.

pretty much ignoring reasonable opportunities for serious interventions.

Looks like there will be lawsuits from some of the victims' families

It's not about the 2nd Amendment (which is about militias, not about gun ownership).

It's the frightening possibility that Delicate Flowers (AKA gun-nuts) fantasize about 24x7: they'll have to face the world unarmed. They are such cowards & so scared that the idea of walking around unarmed terrifies them.
