A quote from Orwell that reminds me of so many Republicans

Orwell describes every Republican I've talked to in the last 10 years.

"Talking to her, he realized how easy it was to present an appearance of orthodoxy while having no grasp whatever of what orthodoxy meant. In a way the world-view of the Party imposed itself most successfully on people incapable of understanding it. They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening."

George Orwell, 1984

1. Another ...

"It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grammes a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grammes a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it. Parsons swallowed it easily, with the stupidity of an animal. The eyeless creature at the other table swallowed it fanatically, passionately, with a furious desire to track down, denounce, and vaporize anyone who should suggest that last week the ration had been thirty grammes."

2. Definition of orthodoxy...

1. Authorized or generally accepted theory, doctrine or practice.

2. The quality of conforming to such theories, doctrines or practices.

Made me look up definition of orthodoxy...

Seems the 1.st definition is the meaning of the first orthodoxy

and the 2 nd definition fits the second orthodoxy.... Subtle difference..

Thank you... and thank you, DU, for providing a haven of sanity.

3. The right has repeatedly accused the left of Orwellian tactics. Which is a perfect example of how

expertly the right uses Orwellian tactics.

"Free speech zones" is one their greatest hits.
