I am the 6th Cousin of GWB and his siblings GHWB my 5th CousinLast edited Wed Oct 24, 2012, 06:53 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
So this means I am probably also related to Mitt can someone just kill me now W was bad enough I don't think I can handle this one
I am also related to the Kennedy's on my Mother's side though JFK was like my 12th cousin twice removed How many Commanders-in-Chief can you get in one family tree? When it’s former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s family tree, the answer is six. According to Ancestry.com, the world’s largest online family history resource, Romney’s family tree connects him to Franklin D. Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin Pierce, Herbert Hoover, and both George H.W. and George W. Bush. Romney is connected to Presidents George W. Bush (10th cousins, twice removed), George H. W. Bush (10th cousins, once removed) and Franklin D. Roosevelt (8th cousins, twice removed) through Ann Marbury Hutchinson, a key figure in the development of religious freedom in America and early settler of Rhode Island and New York.

3. And?
|
I'm related to Obama, George W Bush, Bill Clinton, and Harry Truman. Pretty much any American who has significant colonial ancestry can probably find a relationship with any other American who shares that ancestry. It's not really very significant.

11. I met Richard Nixon once in 1970.
|
He was at his alma mater Whittier College and a group of us kids from the elementary school nearby got to meet the President. Two years later the signs saying "Welcome to Whittier, Hometown of Richard Nixon" were taken down.

12. Back in the 70's my Grandfather said he was a distant cousin to GHWB.
|
I never wanted to know how after he became famous. Yuck! I feel your pain.
My father claimed to be a distant cousin to John Kennedy through his mother's family. At least I am not conflicted as a Democrat. Within 6 or 7 generations we all have thousands of distant relatives who would shock us. |

13. An article I recall reading years ago
|
Made the case that there is a secret aristocracy in America. Some guy did research like you did and found nearly all the presidents were related to European royalty and/or each other.
I don't remember anything else about the article. I read it years ago (pre-Internet days). |

Last edited Thu Oct 25, 2012, 09:42 AM USA/ET - Edit history (2) Since I'm related to Bush Ugh. (and politicos on the proper side of the aisle as well). Just for grins, maybe I'll find the exact relationship and update this later tonight.
ETA: 7th cousins, twice removed from George HW bush, 1 generation removed form GW Bush. I'm also related to Henry Wasdworth Longfellow, Henry David Thoroeau, Orso Welles, Wild Bill Hickock, and FDR. Ugh...guess that FDR connection probably connects me to Romney. And that's only through my paternal grandmother -the only relatively complete genealogy I have. |

19. If you are the 6th cousin of GWB . . .
|
. . . you are the 5th cousin once removed of GHWB. Your parent (whichever one is related) would be GHWB's 5th cousin.

20. I'm not sure but Samuel P. Bush
|
was my mother's great great Uncle making Prescott her 3rd cousin GHWB her 4th and W her 5th My mother's family were all republicans of the old order. My Grandfather would roll-over in his grave if he could see his party now. My Mother and Father were married in the mid sixties voted for Nixon then turned Democratic there after My Dad was always a Democrat he voted for JFK then LBJ then Nixon after Bobby Kennedy died he thought Hubert Humphrey would keep us in Vietnam. In 1972 they both voted for McGovern and every democratic anything ever since.

21. That's not the way it works . . .
|
. . . 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. cousins run in parallel generations. If either side is off by a generation or more, then it is xth cousin (# of generations off) removed.
If Prescott is her third cousin, then GHWB is her 3rd cousin once removed, and GWB her 3rd cousin twice removed. You would be GHWB's fourth cousin, and GWB's 4th cousin once removed. |

23. To make it clearer . . .
|
Last edited Wed Oct 24, 2012, 08:55 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Here's what I mean by parallel generations:
The offspring of two siblings are 1st cousins to each other The offspring of two 1st cousins are 2nd cousins to each other The offspring of two 2nd cousins are 3rd cousins to each other The offspring of two 3rd cousins are 4th cousins to each other, etc. The relationship description always goes through the last parallel cousin relationship. For example, your cousin's child is not your second cousin, but your 1st cousin once removed. Your child, however, would be a 2nd cousin to that same cousin's child. Does that clarify it? |
