Limbaugh freaks as Romney lays claim to Obama's bailout
Rush Limbaugh is freaked out by Mitt Romney giving backhanded praise to President Obama for saving the American auto industry.
This week, in an interview on CBS, Romney defended himself against critics of his work at Bain Capital by equating what he did as a corporate restructuring specialist with Obamas temporary takeover of General Motors and Chrysler in 2009. In the general election, Romney said, Ill be pointing out that the president took the reins at General Motors and Chrysler closed factories, closed dealerships, laid off thousands and thousands of workers he did it to try to save the business.
Limbaugh has gotten his voluminous knickers in a twist because Romney is essentially acknowledging that what Obama did was a good thing. Limbaugh and his legion of cranky followers believe Obamas action was a frightening display of big government socialism aimed at preserving union pensions and union jobs. To them, Romneys words are capitulation, if not treason.
In fact, the Republican front-runners comments amount to something else: another huge flip-flop. In a New York Times op-ed piece in 2008, Romney wrote, If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye."

(23,664 posts)But I can almost predict that he will issue some sort of retraction/explanation/clarification of his previous comment tomorrow. It will be opaque and it will employ a tortured logic and the liberal media will jump backwards through their own assholes to avoid the term flip flop. But it will be as plain as day that Mittens is attempting to appease the fat ass druggie.

(602 posts)I'm not sure this amounts to "praise" or "capitulation" by Romney. In the quote Romney clearly says, "he did it to TRY to save the business". Perhaps he meant that he acknowledges that it was an attempt to do the right thing but (in, of course, his opinion -- not mine) it was a failed attempt. This doesn't exactly look like he's showering praise on the President in this case.

The difference, of course, was that Obama was stepping in to save the auto industry while Mitt was exploiting buyout opportunities and breaking businesses to enrich himself by 10's of millions of dollars. Obviously, Rush wasn't party to the Romney message...which is odd as Limbaugh's employer, Clear Channel, is partially owned by Bain Capital.
