(85,974 posts)"To shuck and jive" originally referred to the intentionally misleading words and actions that African-Americans would employ in order to deceive racist Euro-Americans in power, both during the period of slavery and afterwards. The expression was documented as being in wide usage in the 1920s, but may have originated much earlier.
"Shucking and jiving" was a tactic of both survival and resistance. A slave, for instance, could say eagerly, "Oh, yes, Master," and have no real intention to obey. Or an African-American man could pretend to be working hard at a task he was ordered to do, but might put up this pretense only when under observation. Both would be instances of "doin' the old shuck 'n jive."
Today, the expression has expanded somewhat from earlier usage, and is now sometimes used to mean "talking pure baloney," "goofing off," or "goofing around." The original meaning of deceit often remains, however.

(115,584 posts)She's trying to remain relevant, and is looking almost as desperate as Donald Trump in the process. Let's not give her the publicity she craves.
You almost have to feel sorry for her (though I certainly don't). Four years ago she was the hot commodity. She got rescued from cold, damp obscurity in the meth capital of Alaska and got to spend a few months wearing expensive clothes and appearing on national TV and being the darling of the lunatic fringe. She thought she'd hit the Big Time. But now she's back in Alaska with her bratty kids and her oafish husband and the occasional gig with Fox News. She's fading from the spotlight - and I think we should help that fade happen. The sooner, the better.

(5,810 posts)hiding place in Wasilla and tweets or blurts out some commentary that we're supposed to stand up and salute. I am sure that some on Fox (or their viewers) get all warm and tingly when she makes her presence known. The rest of us just get an uncomfortable rumbling in our intestines.
This woman needs to just give it up. When she lost in 2008, she should have gotten a clue. She has limited utility in the political world and most of that was used up a long time ago. Maybe she can go back to Wasilla and watch the moose eat the willows and keep an eye out on Russia for us. I am sure she can make a book out of that. Bring in a little more cash since apparently there will always be a few numbnuts out there who still buy her crap.
