'Think Progress' Smears BRAD BLOG Coverage of Voting Machine Concerns as 'Conspiracy Theory'

To be frank, while it's no secret that the Center for American Progress has always been an outside extension of the Democratic Party, their important blog site, Think Progress, has served as a crucial, and journalistically sound fact-checker on the excesses, inaccuracies and blatant fabrications of the Right over the past several years.

I have been more than happy to cite their excellent work on a number of fronts over the years and take no pleasure in calling them, their new Senior Editor Judd Legum, and one of their writers, Aviva Shen, out here on The BRAD BLOG for an egregious and, frankly, outrageous journalistic failure.

It is one thing to make an error. We all do it. It is quite another thing indeed --- and what, in my opinion, separates real journalists from hacks --- when, once called out with independently fact-based and verifiable evidence of those errors, one sticks to the original error come what may.

That's exactly what Legum and Think Progress have decided to do, as the email discussion between Legum and me illustrates below...

1. That's disgusting. Brad has been the most valuable reporter on elections since Palast.

Those alleged 'conspiracies' have resulted in real world convictions for election fraud. The reason Brad reports these things is not to discourage voting, but to get better verification. Screw 'em.

2. Exactly! It's a shame we haven't heard anything from Palast or Robert F. Kennedy Jr. lately

And as far as Think Progress are concerned, it's very disappointing to have to say "screw 'em", as I've been visiting their site for years, but I'm 100% behind Brad Blog on this one.

3. It is EXTREMELY easy to rig the count on electronic voting machines

There have been lots of studies done, loads of articles about it and even one or two court cases.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacking_Democracy

http://www.rawstory.com/rawreplay/2011/09/diebold-voting-machines-hacked-with-10-in-parts/

A quick google search
https://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=hacking+voting+machine&oq=hacking+voting+machine&gs_l=hp.3..0j0i7i30l2j0i30j0i5i30j0i8i30.165282.166679.2.168484.8.8.0.0.0.0.115.711.4j4.8.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1.qJIUNdrTmdE&psj=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=4a762d82895734c9&bpcl=35466521&biw=1024&bih=587

One of the court cases
http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/2750/blowing_the_whistle_on_diebold/

CNN - it only takes 1 minute to hack a voting machine

It's not as if it is a partisan issue - both sides of the aisle agree.

states with electronic voting

The US vote counting system is one of the least secure systems in the entire world.
Even Venezuela has a more secure and less prone to fraud system.

7. This is how I got chased off of DailyKos

They called me a conspiracy theorist because I did not have the proof that the voting machine patent laws prevents anyone from getting. Since you can't prove it, it's a conspiracy. One would think that intelligent people might consider that this is part of the thieves' plans!

12. I agree with the Think Progress report

"The rigged machines myth is not only distracting, but harms the effort to get out the vote. Conservative groups have been promoting vote suppression tactics for a reason: votes count. In Ohio, for instance, despite the Republican Partyís best efforts to restrict early voting hours, voter turnout is on pace to surpass 2008, with Obama leading among people who have already voted. Spreading the myth that the system is so corrupt that these votes donít matter tells voters they may as well sit out the election."

13. That is always the excuse

for not looking at the problem. You'll "harm the effort to get out the vote." I doubt it. What it does is bury the whole issue and is a disservice to the voters--they need to know what to look out for esp if they vote by touchscreen.

PLEASE GET A COPY of the latest (Nov) "Harpers" -- an article "How to Rig An Election" is absolutely the best current article out there about the whole issue. I think you'll change your mind.

15. I don't think it's an 'excuse for not looking at the problem' at all.

I think the disservice is stating that something like this *is* happening without proof. Especially since those machines are only being used in 2 counties.

In addition, the TP piece goes on to discuss the idea that it can distract from other suppression and cheating tactics.

Again, I agree with TP.

And... on edit: I don't think anyone is saying 'don't look!', only... don't publicly state it's happening without proof. There's a difference.

16. Two counties???

What in the world are u talking about

Go here and look at the map:
http://verifiedvoting.org/

A BILLION was spent (so-called Help America Vote Act--2002) to bring UN-verified, UNreliable, vote-switching, Republican manufactured, secret "proprietary" coded DRE touchscreen voting to America. They are being replaced completely in Maryland, as they have been in Germany and Ireland--in favor of ye olde paper optiscan. But they are still in use across the country. Check the map.

The issue is RELATED to suppression and cheating tactics--you know, election rigging is a multi-pronged strategy--helped out by the Dem party as well-- as you illustrate.

PLEASE--just READ the Harpers article--that is ALL I ask.

--And then, after that I would suggest Bradblog and the DU Election Reform forum--but the Harpers article gives it to you in a nutshell.

24. It doesn't matter if you agree with them or not, they are factually incorrect.

And that's really the point, isn't it?

And, the liars at Think Progress not only know that they are lying, they don't care.

Do you even understand what they are lying about?

They accuse Brad Blog of making a certain claim, a certain claim that Brad Blog has, in fact, never made. And they KNOW that Brad Blog has never made such a claim.

When any member of the press projects an opinion onto another member of the press, an opinion that is false, an opinion that the other person has never claimed to hold, in fact, an opinion that the other member has specifically denied holding, then that is always a very nasty bit of business.

This is bad, very bad. Evil, I would say. I stand firmly with Brad Blog in their fight against evil.

Well I guess Brad Friedman is used to that treatment. He's been dealing with The Elephant in the Room for a long time--since 2000 at least. He's well-respected and his work is solid.

Brad

Yeah --even progressives DON'T want to acknowledge that we are "working against ourselves" --if we don't address the myriad ways that our election process is compromised.

Our system is severely compromised --and increasingly, under Republican control.

26. Maybe this is good, if a back and forth would occur maybe this would get

addressed? We have to be able to look into it and not be called conspiracy theorists, that's a cheap shot. If it's not an issue then lay out exact technical proof and guarantees.

36. It's one thing to say Now Is Not The Time, but another to dismiss evidence. Did our Democratic

legislators try to introduce bills to return to paper ballots? They could have tried and been filibustered.

If not, let's hope we get a Democratic majority again that will eliminate unverifiable electronic voting with machines with proprietary code owned by private companies who have declared allegiance to the Republican Party.

Now is not the time.

But January 2009 was the time.

And January 2013 will be the time again.
