Millions of Americans to Be Driven Into Poverty, Study Says
Posted on Jan 12, 2012

The number of Americans living in poverty has grown by 27 percent, or 10 million people, since the beginning of the “Great Recession” in 2006, according to an Indiana University study. And because of continued cuts to welfare programs and an increase in new, poorly paid jobs, those figures will continue to rise. —ARK

The Guardian:

“One of the big surprises is that poverty in the United States is likely to continue to increase even as the economic recovery unfolds,” said Graham. “The unique feature of the great recession is not just the high rate of unemployment, but the long duration of unemployment that millions of Americans have experienced. [For] a lot of these long-term unemployed, the job that they had won’t exist when they go back in to the labour market.”

Graham said that many of those who once held well-paid jobs will be forced to settle for lower paying work, trapping some in a permanent cycle of poverty.

Better than they ever have in the history of our country.

For the rest... let them eat peas."*

Meanwhile, the "super rich" (oh I am sorry, the "job creators&quot are doing superbly well. Since 1979, top 0.1% income has more than tripled while the bottom %90 income has gone up only about 16%.
But don't worry, it is going to trickle down.

4. "Driven" to poverty. Mitt Romney can drive you there if you need a ride.

But this is no surprise at all to anyone who has been paying attention to all the policy changes in favor of the uber-wealthy the past couple of decades (especially the past 10 years).

No surprise. It's like following a recipe and having it turned out just as the recipe said it would.

7. Now that it is campaign season, we know that Obama cares. He told us so himself.

Of course, the fact that he cannot accomplish anything to stop the downward spiral is due to the obstructionist Republicans.

With the obstructionist Republicans (who might have had actual filibusters if the Senate leadership had ordered the Senate's business to proceed instead of saying "OK, we give up because we don't think that we have enough votes to invoke cloture under Senate Rule XXII), President Obama was forced to send "Free Trade Agreements" with South Korea, Columbia, and Panama to the Senate.

Who knew that they had so much power?

If I understand the mantra correctly, we must enthusiastically re-elect Obama (instead of holding our noses when we vote) so that he can work with Republicans or try to. Now that he wants to engage in insourcing, with the co-operation of whatever Republicans are elected, millions of manufacturing jobs will return and poverty will be reduced.

Cynical? Excuse me, but I've earned the right to be distrustful. He knew that the nation was going into poverty when he took office. He knew it when he promised to renegotate NAFTA. He knew it when he spent so much time and energy pushing for the Republican's plan to have the mandatory purchase of health insurance. He knew it when he sent the so-called Free Trade Agreements to the Senate. Three years is a long time to wait. Maybe we should have Presidential elections every year.
