He was George McGovern's running mate, but when it came out that he'd had treatment for mental health issues, he was replaced by Sargent Shriver. If anyone remembers, it was a huge deal at the time.

I think the difference is that Eagleton's issue was depression. At the time, I recall thinking that I would prefer someone who had been successfully treated for his issues rather than a nut job (Nixon) who had not been treated. 1972 was the election season that saw the slogan "Don't change Dicks in the middle of a screw".

I agree with other posters that Romney's issues may be a combination of narcissism, sociopathy and a general lack of moral fiber, all of which make him unsuitable for office.

Eagleton's big issue was that he'd received ECT (electro convulsive therapy). That was considered serious enough to make a difference. I remember one of my psych professors said that he didn't think anyone who'd received ECT was fit for office, though he may have been a Republican, don't know.

But I certainly agree about Mittens. He just can't relate to people, which is certainly essential for the Leader of the Free World, let alone understanding how his fellow Americans live. So far, he's succeeded in insulting our allies without even trying. How would he do negotiating with those who don't like us?

he goes crazy and that is why Ann always stays around - not a direct quote, but that is the essence.

WHY OH WHY are these two statements not getting coverage by Big Ed, Tweety, etc.
