Tea Party pushes for memorial at landfill
King George A citizen effort is underway to establish a memorial to fallen service personnel at the King George Landfill.
Based on a news story in The Journal and other area publications, citizens became aware that cremated and incinerated partial remains of some military personnel were disposed of at the King George Landfill.

Regarding the current efforts being planned for a memorial at the landfill, Grzeika said, I can understand the emotional response but I believe it is prudent to stop and think about this from the perspective of the families affected by this travesty.
Would you really want a memorial at a landfill? Wouldnt it be more prudent and fitting to have a ceremony and a memorial created at Arlington or some other fitting site? said Grzeika. I am just one board member and once all the details are fully known I think then the Board, affected families and the military services should consider what the proper action would be.

(19,339 posts)remains," do they mean amputated limbs and other medical waste, or do they mean entire bodies were cremated and some of the ashes went to a landfill, and some went home with the family in a box? Oddly -- and I know this is irrational -- there is a difference, for me.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)To summarize, prior to 2008, the Dover Mortuary occasionally received portions of remains separate from those that were received and disposed of according to the preferences of the next of kin. Usually, these "remains" were small fragments of bone or tissue.
In these cases, families had formalized a preference for not being notified of additional remains. These remains were escorted to a funeral home for cremation. The ashes were then disposed of by passing them off through an approved contract service.
The Air Force made a decision in 2008 (after an investigation into the landfill dis- position) to bury these types of remains at sea. They have done so since.
As to notification of next of kin, with respect for expressed requests to not be notified of additional remains (one can understand why), the Air Force did not report to families on the disposal or the change in procedures.

(6,187 posts)...appendixes, amputated legs, etc in hospitals every day. Damned near every landfill in any number of countries is the final resting place for such. Should all of those be aforded a memorial?
Manufactured outrage. Including I suspect that of many of the next of kin, who felt they had to be outraged or be slammed for not caring enough a about their lost ones.
This was/is NOT a case of sifting through rubble to give a family SOMETHING to bury (9/11). This is (essentially) scraps found behind a seat in a vehicle hit by an RPG or IED after bodies had been removed and repatriated, but before the vehicle was sent for destruction.
