What happens when you place a scientific article on Drudge's website

http://blog.chron.com/sciguy/2012/10/more-evidence-that-voyager-has-exited-the-solar-system/

Headline: "More evidence that Voyager has exited the Solar System"

The article itself is rather straightforward, addressing the scientific definition of what it means to actually leave the solar system. This is about a potential milestone in human spaceflight.

Reading through the comments, the responses also seem to be pretty average - legitimate scientific discussion, with a few humorous responses (several references to V'ger from Star Trek).

At some point, the article was picked up and linked to on Drudge's website. Browsing through the comments, it's pretty clear to see at which point the Drudgites started making their way to the article. A quick sampling:

Come on guys…get real! Nasa will claim that both Voyager’s are all about Muslim out reach, that it creates jobs, has a very small carbon foot print and the obligatory, “for the children”.

it’s a wonder ‘bama hasn’t shut down the funding for the receiver so Voyager’s signals go unheard…after all, it isn’t in the qu’ran that we need to go into space.

Is there anything that these Luddites won't turn into their personal anti-Obama fest?

1. Don't forget...

To the average Obama hater, the Voyager space probes and the Moon landings are all hoaxes, Satanic plots against the *TRUTH* that the Earth is flat and at the center of the universe.

4. You can be in an article about

cooking recipes, and someone will throw out that somehow their recipe failing is a conspiracy caused by the Obama administration. "My chicken cacciatore didn't turn out right because Obama is ruining the quality of America's vegetables by forcing school children to eat more of them" or some such drivel.

I wish I was kidding that I was being facetious, but I'm not - I saw that somewhere, and just had to laugh. "My coffee wasn't strong enough this morning and it's raining out, &%^#-ing Obama"!.

5. My souffle fell!

Goddamned Kenyan Atheist Muslims made it fall with a spell!

We really *really* need easily accessible mental health care in this country. Blaming everyday events on vast conspiracies against you isn't being partisan, it's paranoid schizophrenia. I say that with absolutely no malice. They really do need help, and I wish it were easier for them to get it.
