"Evolution is a Lie from the Pit of Hell" Broun (R-GA)

Even by the standards of insane video, this is some seriously insane video—the Hall of Dead Deer Heads is unforgettable.

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) tore into scientists as tools of the devil in a speech at the Liberty Baptist Church Sportsman’s Banquet last month.

“All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell,” Broun said. “And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”

According to Broun, the scientific plot was primarily concerned with hiding the true age of the Earth. Broun serves on the House Science Committee, which came under scrutiny recently after another one of its Republican members, Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), suggested that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses against pregnancy.

“You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth,” he said. “I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says.”

Most people simply seeking to make money will choose another, easier path because of the enormous commitment of time and effort it takes to make it through. This and the prohibitive cost of a medical education usually thins away those who are less gifted or poorly motivated.

Usually.

He's their choice. Congress and the nation get to deal with whatever falls out of that.

Personally I find it delicious that a licensed MD disbelieves the central organizing principle of biology and finds no conflict with that extreme belief and the acceptance of results of medical research on animal models. I'd dump an MD who suggested divine intervention as medical recourse in an instant.

If you respect our system of representative government, then it's necessary to respect the choice of the people of the Georgia 10th.

Carping about his stupidity (and I do mean stupid in the sense of slow on the uptake...by somewhere between 150 and 72 years depending on what particular piece of evidence you ,ight think cinched evolution as overwhelmingly empirically supported) really doesn't do much.

This seat should be as blue as downtown Atlanta, yet the DEM party can't even field a candidate.

If they'd stop fighting with each other, and fight for good seats like this one, they might freak themselves out and win.

This rest of this district consists of cow fields, cows and one or two farmers.

It's Athens, then cowfields and farms. Several pottery barns, with one or two employees.

One tiny town in each county, population 100, if that.

My husband worked in Cornelia.

on edit:
And, if the DEMs got busy at UGA lots of those kids WOULD vote.

And they don't think their ignorance of the nature of knowledge/science matters.

It's almost a laff, 'cause, since truth matters, their ignorance matters, so we might speculate that the dysfunctions they propagate are painful lessons in store for all of us. Question is: how painful? in what manner(s)? for how many? because the answers to those questions can make or break the success of almost any adaptive correction.

How does he square his beliefs with geology and carbon dating?

He is spewing dangerous obscenities about science. It's most unfortunate for the children of
his district that they may well be hearing some of this garbage.

I thought I had seen it all, but, Congressman Broun may be the dumbest of the dumb and the most arrogant of the arrogant. It is disaster that he is allowed to speak in public.

42. Politician disses embryology; embryologists promptly win Nobel prize
Mon Oct 8, 2012, 04:14 PM
Oct 2012
Jerry beat me to posting the just announced Nobel winners, John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka (see here also), but I can’t help but note that the prize was awarded for work in embryology, Gurdon having done classic cytological (cell and nucleus) manipulation experiments 50 years ago, while Yamanaka has applied more recently available molecular tools to the same problem. Gurdon was able to place an adult nucleus inside a frog egg, and induce the egg to develop into a normal tadpole (showing that the adult nucleus retains all the information for normal embryonic development), while Yamanaka discovered the molecular signals in the egg that tell the nucleus to “start over”.

Congressman Paul Broun (R-Georgia), of course, has just become a media star (see here, here, and here for just a few examples) for denouncing embryology as a hellish lie. That Broun is an MD spewing such nonsense is made deliciously comic by the Nobel Prize for Medicine being awarded for work in embryology the day after Broun became infamous, but the tale becomes tragic when you realize he is a member of the House Science Committee.
