A quick, easy to digest, summary of Romney's debate lies:

1. "We spend 42% of GDP like Spain."
Fact: US Spending 2011: $3.59 trillion, GDP: $15.09 trillion = 23%

2. "Half of green energy businesses went bankrupt."
Fact: Only 2 of 33 failed - a 94% success rate.

3. "Obama doubled the Debt."
Fact: 2008 = $10-trillion Today: $16-trillion

60% is not double. Bush did double the debt - $5 trillion to $10 trillion

4. "Gas prices doubled."

Fact: Gas prices:

July 2008 = $4.12 - US Record
Sept 2012 = $3.78

Romney used the recession-bottom price of $1.61 caused by the recession. Apparently he's advocating financial melt-downs to lower gas prices.

5. "I know of no tax-breaks sending jobs overseas."

Fact: Here are four:
a) Deductions for moving/running business overseas.
b) Deferred taxes on profits made overseas.
c) Deductions/credits on foreign taxes. Savings: 135%
d) Overseas subsidiaries exempted from US taxes.

6. "Dodd-Frank designates companies too big to fail."

Fact: It does not. It mandates that business
with more than $250 billion are too big and dangerous and
must setup a bankruptcy plan WITHOUT requiring a
taxpayer bailout.

7. "Obama spent $90 billion on green energy."

Fact: The DOE says the amount is: $29 billion - Romney is THREE TIMES too high.

Romney includes non-green programs like $6 billion in Nuclear Weapons cleanup, $3 billion in "Clean" coal and $4 billion to power distribution upgrades

1. What on earth does the price of gas in July 2008 have to do with anything?

Gas prices have indeed doubled under President Obama. I agree that this is a cheap shot (gas prices were depressed in the financial crisis just like other asset prices) but the statement is accurate.

2. Comparing gas prices to EXACTLY four years ago... not comparing them to the bottom of the financial

crisis.

3. The way to address it is to point out that all asset prices increase in a recovery.

And that while gas prices have risen, so have share prices, as investors gain confidence in the economy. This has helped many people's 401k accounts.

4. It's a cheap shot because republicans want to forget gas prices spiked

Up to their highest level under Bush before the global economy crashed. They want to make it sound like Obama's policy's raised prices when all that has happened is the economy improved.

9. Gas Prices are going a LOT higher regardless of who is in the White House

Oil Production has peaked and nothing we can do will change that.

China and India have populations who want more oil. US Consumers show no signs of intelligence (that is, getting off oil).

I would not be surprised to see oil prices double again during Obama's second term.

So you better get ready for it.

11. Been driving a Prius for years

Getting an electric vehicle next month. Hubby uses the subway You are right. Why anyone continues to drive a large car unnecessarily is beyond me.

5. I looked up my old records on gas prices.

Last edited Fri Oct 5, 2012, 08:40 AM - Edit history (1)

7/12/08: $4.00/gal (highest I ever paid)

12/29/08: $1.60/gal (lowest in five years)

10/02/12: $3.65/gal but most nearby were $3.75/gal.

Thanks for the handy reference.

8. This is great, but you need to source everything

to make it useful to the rest of us.

I'm assuming you already have the sources at your disposal, so please do us a further solid by posting the ballast for each of those statements.

Thanks for the initial post, and thanks in advance for the sources.

10. LOL, I wish Obama spent $90 billion on green energy...

It would have been money well spent.
