Romney's Biggest (And Least Discussed) Lie of the Debate

The Biggest (and Least Discussed) Lie of the Debate

There’s one assertion that has received minimal attention in the after-action coverage of the debate — and it was one of the most blatant lies of the night.

The comment came about two thirds of the way through the conversation. As Romney was riffing on funding education, he pivoted to his talking points on Obama’s support of renewable energy and let this whopper loose:

“And these (clean energy) businesses, many of them have gone out of business, I think about half of them, of the ones have been invested in, have gone out of business.”

The New York Times , one of the few mainstream organizations to follow up on this claim, called Romney’s comment a “gross overstatement.”

Actually, it’s much more offensive than that.

So let’s narrow Romney’s statement down to the loan guarantee program. Are we getting closer to the truth? No.

The loan guarantee program Romney referenced supported dozens of companies. Of those companies, four recently went bankrupt due to difficult market conditions. But that’s out of 33 companies that received loan guarantees or commitments for loan guarantees. That translates to a 10 percent failure rate representing roughly 2 percent of budgeted funds for the program — a big difference from the 50 percent failure rate that Romney claimed.

1. Actually

Actually, probably one of the most unreported lies was his claim that Romney said that he made it clear his support for Romney care was always on a state by state basis, "I made it clear at that time."

That's a lie. Romney supported his plan on a federal level and did so throughout many interviews and even his book, which he had rewritten to remove the offending point.

2. Romney's entire debate was one big lie.

We are lucky Obama didn't go into the muck to try and sort all the crazy stuff Romney said out.

And now we see that Mitt brought along a cheat sheet in order to keep all his lies straight.

This is a guy that runs down gay boys and cuts their hair and pushes his kids' faces into their plates of food. Please explain why he is even allowed on the stage.

3. Let's compare Obama's performance to Romney's

In the time Obama has been president, he gave either loan guarantees or commitments for guarantees to 33 companies and four have gone bankrupt. They went bankrupt because of "outside influences" like the Chinese dumping solar panels into the market, causing US solar manufacturing to collapse. Failure rate: 12.1 percent.

When Romney was running Bain Capital, he bought 77 businesses. 17 of them went bankrupt. Those companies died trying to meet their obligations to Bain Capital. Failure rate: 22.07 percent.

So who's the better businessman?
