Stop the attack on Social Security.

If Democrats stand for anything, we should stand for protecting Social Security.

Please call, write, protest. Contact your representatives and the White House.

Raise hell, and spread the word.

The attack on Social Security is well-planned and manipulated by both parties. It is largely a quiet, stealth attack, and the mainstream media is not covering it. Debate moderater Jim Lehrer allowed the topic to pass without a single demand for details.

The vast majority of Americans likely have no idea whatsoever that these attacks are on the way, and that they will come even from the Democratic President.

The chained CPI cuts are cleverly designed to start small and grow significantly over time, so that retirees will not notice an actual decrease in benefits immediately....just a slowing of growth. They are designed that way to reduce the likelihood of pushback from the people they will affect. But make no mistake about it, the attack rapidly becomes more vicious over time.

This theft of Social Security affects all of us. It is a historic assault on the safety nets that millions of Americans depend upon for survival, and the fact that this assault is happening should be front and center for every American and every news organization right now. Polls show consistently that Americans across party lines want to preserve Social Security benefits. Do we still have a representative form of government, or not?

Do not allow this to happen quietly. Raise hell now. It is our only hope.

SS COLA is already below the actual cost of living, the chained COLA is going to severely impact the ability of recipients to maintain their already meager lifestyle.

1/3 of retirees rely on SS for 90%+ of their income; 2/3 rely on it for more than half of their income.

IOW, the majority of retirees would be poor or outright destitute if not for SS. Only 1/3 of retirees lead anything approaching the "high life" we hear about so often.



The one percent have been trying for decades to figure out a way to steal this money. They have finally come up with a plan that is working.

It is time to raise holy hell. This country has been looted. Don't let them loot Social Security, too.

they represent the 1% and corporations, the rest of us, not so much, only when they really have to.

Wise words written in 1776, more people really need to go back and read the Declaration of Independence and think about what the FF were really saying.

9. The people have the most leverage before elections.

We must force the media and the candidates to have this conversation.

Democrats have run on being the defenders of the 99 percent. We must hold them to that promise, and that means protecting, not attacking, Social Security.

12. I understand some on DU want us to stay silent for another month....

But the President himself says that we are the ones who have to bring change. And just as the President said that we deserve the truth from Romney--I think we deserve the truth from him. Define what you mean by "tweak.? Just because the President doesn't want to reveal his hand going into a "grand bargain"---doesn't mean that the "tweakees" do not deserve to know how they will be "tweaked."

The President needs to be more specific NOW and REITERATE where he stands--as Bernie Sanders has asked. I know what he said in 2008...and I know I want to trust him. But especially after that strange comment in the debate "about Romney being in "agreement" with him on Social Security--we deserve some answers.

Joe Biden said there will be "no changes in benefits"...I want to hear it from Barack himself!

15. That is not what I heard Biden say.

I heard him say only that there would be no changes to the SS *program,* which would still leave in play the possibility of a chained CPI to attack benefits.

The silence on this is extremely disturbing.

18. i think the definition of 'tweak' was already given by either obama or biden: "tweak like reagan

 

did in the 80s".

which meant: making workers pay more than the cost of maintaining current retirees, taxing retirees, cost of living adjustments & ending certain benefits, all so a trust fund surplus could be built up to fund income tax cuts for the rich.

there's your 'tweak'.

19. Not good enough--we deserve a simple definition--no weasel word framing...

We deserve to be able to say "yes we support that' and/or HELL NO, you aren't going to raise the retirement age again."
The hell with giving the President "wiggle room" for a grand bargain--Social Security should NOT even be on the table. Raise the cap as advocated by the President himself in 2008 and be done with it.

We need to raise a fuss now--before it's too late.
